Face Sunscreen Guide 2024 Part 2 Japanese Sunscreens

Face Sunscreen Guide 2024, Part 2: Japanese sunscreens

Intro
At a glance

My 2024 face sunscreen guide, part 2: I tell you all about my tests for this year’s Japanese sunscreen products!

I know I’m not the only one who likes them! Today, I’m pleased to share with you my thoughts on Japanese sunscreens, which are a firm favourite with anyone who likes a fresh, melting texture, but still wants a long-lasting sunscreen! It can be particularly hot and humid in Japan, and Japanese sunscreens are formulated to stay on the skin even in these extreme conditions, without compromising on the sensoriality of the textures! Sounds great, don’t you think? 😉

If you haven’t read the first part of my 2024 Guide, you can find it here: Face Sunscreen Guide 2024, Part 1: European sunscreens.

For someone like me who lives in a desert area with a particularly humid summer season (yes, humidity is everywhere when you live near the sea, even in a desert area!), Japanese sunscreens are generally ideal and I particularly cherish them as the hot (and suffocating) season approaches.

Japanese sunscreens are also a real godsend if, like me, you have combination skin and live in a hot, humid climate during the summer, but still want to wear makeup (triple challenge!). Their texture is often lightweight, making them perfect for makeup. This undoubtedly reflects Japanese culture, which prioritises daily UV protection, offering products that are easy to wear for everyday use. And it surely also explains the popularity of Japanese sunscreen products throughout South-East Asia, which can endure this type of hot, humid climate for a large part of the year! 😉

However, the sunscreen products I’ll be covering in this guide aren’t exclusively designed for everyday city use. Many of them are designed for outdoor activities; they’re very long-lasting and water-resistant. So, if you’re looking for sunscreens that are suitable for both the city and the beach (or outdoor sports), you should enjoy this article! 😊

It’s also worth noting that Japanese sunscreens frequently contain alcohol. Alcohol in a sunscreen formula helps to lighten the texture. Although alcohol is often criticised and perceived as an irritating or drying ingredient, I’d like to remind you that a product is above all a whole formulation, not just a list of ingredients to be considered one by one (isn’t that right, Yuka? 😝). And in the case of the products I’m featuring here, the rest of the formula plays a crucial role in balancing this effect. And personally, I find most of them very pleasant to use, and not drying or irritating.

Now, on my skin, alcohol doesn’t generally cause any concern, unless my skin is super fragile. This could be due to the fact that I alternate types of sunscreen (mineral, chemical or hybrid), as I explained in a previous article, which potentially limits irritation. But honestly, to write all my sunscreen guides, I’ve used sunscreens containing alcohol for several weeks in a row, and I have no irritation to report!

It’s worth pointing out that many of the sunscreens I’m introducing here are hybrid sunscreens (combining mineral and chemical filters). This type of protection is generally highly effective, but can sometimes leave a slight white cast. It’s not always the case, and these formulations are generally well designed to be invisible once applied, but I wanted you to be aware of this, and I’ll mention it if it’s the case in the product description.

Incidentally, I don’t have any mineral sunscreens in my selection this year. Actually, I did have one (from Bioré) but apparently it was only available as a limited edition for a very short time, and it’s now impossible to find online. It wasn’t my favourite anyway, so you’re not missing much! 😉

Hey, it could be what helps you find the exact skincare product you were looking for.
We wouldn't want you missing out on that now, would we 🙂

Note that, as is often the case in the Asian market, Japanese brands frequently reformulate their best-selling products to incorporate the latest innovations, or to remain competitive from a marketing point of view. Popular formulas are improved every year or two. This is notably the case with the Anessa sunscreens mentioned in this article. The formulas featured in this guide are the most recent on the market, with the majority from 2024. 🙂

If you’d like to know more about my criteria for choosing the sunscreens I use, I’d refer you to my first part Face Sunscreen Guide 2024, Part 1: European sunscreens. And as in my other sunscreen articles, you can go directly to the product that interests you from the “Direct Access” menu at the top of the page. 😉

100% chemical sunscreens:

The textures of these are generally delightful, nearly imperceptible, and very lightweight on the skin. A majority of them are sheer, a characteristic that is greatly appreciated. Some of them have a satin-like finish, so keep that in mind if you’re prone to excessive shine throughout the day. However, if you have a drier skin type, you will probably fancy them! 🙂

Rohto Mentholatum Skin Aqua UV Super Moisture Gel SPF 50+ PA++++:

The formula for this product is exactly the same as the one released last year, which I’ve already reviewed. But in 2024, the brand changed its packaging, so I’m reposting my review from last year with a photo of this year’s packaging to keep everything up to date! 😉

∎ Price:
Between $7 and $15 for 110ml.

∎ Protection:
SPF 50+, PA++++

∎ Made in:
Japan

∎ Texture:
A really pleasant texture, one of my favorites from the selection. At first, it looks like a fluid, but in reality it’s a kind of fluid gel-cream, super melting and fresh, both very comfortable and quick to absorb, without leaving a greasy finish on the skin. The skin is moisturized and plumped, but without feeling “heavy”.

∎ UV filters:
– Uvinul A Plus: chemical filter for UVA.
– Octinoxate: chemical filter for UVB.
– Uvinul T 150: chemical filter for UVB.
– Tinosorb S: chemical filter for UVA and UVB.

The new system of silica-encapsulated UV filters, featuring Rohto’s UV Light Durability Technology, offers the skin more uniform protection against UV rays while reducing the risk of irritation.

∎ Full ingredients list:
Water, ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, alcohol, butylene glycol, isononyl isononanoate, sodium hyaluronate, hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid, hydroxypropyltrimonium hyaluronate, bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine, silica, diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate, diethoxyethyl succinate, acrylates/C10-30 alkyl acrylate crosspolymer, polyglyceryl-10 pentaisostearate, ethylhexyl triazone, triethanolamine, bis-PEG-18 methyl ether dimethyl silane, disodium ED’ xanthan gum, phenoxyethanol.

∎ Alcohol?
Yes.

∎ Fragrance?
No. (although the formula does have a slight scent, which you can smell at first but which fades almost immediately).

∎ Antioxidants?
No.

∎ Other skincare ingredients in the formula:
Yes, hyaluronic acid of three different molecular weights, providing multi-level skin hydration.

∎ White cast?
No, not on me, it’s completely transparent.

∎ Irritating? Comedogenic?
No, not on me.

∎ Mattifying?
Not particularly, the finish is rather satiny. Throughout the day, I am a bit more “glowy” than usual, but not oily or greasy.

∎ Drying?
No, it’s comfortable. The skin feels fresh and hydrated.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
It’s a good makeup base. Foundation applies very well over it. Considering that my skin is rather combination, I just need to ensure I apply powder to avoid looking shiny too quickly, but it’s something I have to do anyway. This sunscreen doesn’t particularly enhance my shine throughout the day.

∎ Would I repurchase?
Yes, why not? I really like this sunscreen! The texture is really super pleasant and fresh. I also like the fact that it’s available in a larger size than average (there are several sizes, I have the intermediate one which is already 110ml). In Japan, it’s sold as a face and body sunscreen. I really enjoy using it on my décolleté and arms. Another advantage, it’s very resistant, and even withstands sweat and water (for 80 minutes). So, it’s a sunscreen that works for both the city and the beach! It’s designed to resist pollution particles, which is always an advantage. Last, considering its generous size, I find it really affordable. 🙂

Why not! It’s very fresh, very pleasant to use and my skin tolerates it really well. Its texture is fresh and pleasant, and it also looks great under makeup. Like the gel version above, this sunscreen is specially formulated to adhere even to sweaty skin. It’s also waterproof (for 80 minutes). ∎ Mattifying?
No, the finish is more satin-like, even glowy. It will appeal to those with dry skin, or those who like that dewy effect. Personally, I quite like it too, even on my combination skin, because the effect is more “radiant” than “greasy”. In summer, it makes me shine a little too much with the ambient heat and humidity, but for the rest of the year, I just a little bit more powder to blot the excess shine! 🙂

∎ Drying?
No, it’s comfortable. The skin feels fresh and hydrated.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
It’s a good makeup base. Foundation applies very well over it. But if you want a more matte result and long-lasting makeup, you’ll need to use powder! 😉

Finally, it’s pretty affordable, especially for the quantity! 🙂
And if I had to choose between this Essence version and the Gel version seen above, I think the Gel version suits my combination skin the best. But frankly, this Essence version is great too!

It’s a good makeup base. Foundation applies very well over it. Considering that my skin is rather combination, I just need to ensure I apply powder to avoid looking shiny too quickly.

∎ Would I repurchase?
Yes, it’s a good option! I know that Kosé sunscreens are very popular, but I hadn’t yet had the chance to test the brand. Now I have, and I completely understand the hype!
The texture of this one is really nice and fresh. It features a ‘Super Stretch Fit’ technology that forms a flexible film that adheres to the skin and adapts to every movement, providing effective protection against water, sebum, perspiration, friction and skin movements, with increased resistance to swimming. And it’s waterproof for up to 80 minutes. Suncut’s signature AllerGuard system also protects the skin against pollen, dust and other environmental stress factors. So it’s an effective sunscreen for both the city and the beach! And finally, I find it affordable overall, especially considering its 80ml size.
On my combination skin, given that its finish isn’t mattifying, I have to remember to apply some powder, but the shine is very manageable, it’s not greasy at all! 🙂

Water, cyclomethicone, zinc oxide, alcohol, ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, isododecane, propylene glycol dicaprate, C12-15 alkyl benzoate, silica, trimethylsiloxysilicate, diethylhexyl succinate, diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate, polysilicone-15, bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine, chamomilla recutita (matricaria) flower extract, salvia officinalis (sage) leaf extract, tocopherol, sodium hyaluronate, simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil, hydrolyzed collagen, butylene glycol, BHT, acrylates/ethylhexyl acrylate/dimethicone methacrylate copolymer, stearoyl inulin, triethoxycaprylylsilane, polyhydroxystearic acid, lauryl PEG-9 polydimethylsiloxyethyl dimethicone, sodium lauroyl glutamate, phenoxyethanol.

∎ Alcohol?
Yes.

∎ Fragrance?
No.

∎ Antioxidants?
Yes, chamomille extract.

∎ Other skincare ingredients in the formula:
Yes, hydrating hyaluronic acid, collagen and jojoba oil, and soothing chamomile extract.

∎ White cast?
A very slight white cast, but on my fair skin it’s barely noticeable.

∎ Irritating? Comedogenic?
Not on me.

∎ Mattifying?
Yes, it helps to absorb shine throughout the day.

∎ Drying?
Not on my combination skin, I find it comfortable, but I imagine that for drier skin, there are more moisturising products.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
It’s a great makeup base. The foundation applies very well over it, and even has a nice blurring effect if, like me, you have dilated pores in the central area of your face. It also makes makeup last longer, which is good for those with skin that tends to shine during the day.

∎ Would I repurchase?
Yes, quite possibly, it’s a real favourite! As I said earlier, I know that Kosé sunscreens are very popular, but I hadn’t yet had the chance to test the brand. Now I have and I completely understand the hype!
The finish of this sunscreen is great if you like a dry feel and want to limit excess shine. It also features a ‘Super Stretch Fit’ technology, which forms a flexible film that adheres to the skin and adapts to every movement, providing effective protection against water, sebum, perspiration, rubbing and skin movements, with increased resistance for swimming. And it’s waterproof for up to 80 minutes. Suncut’s signature AllerGuard system also protects the skin against pollen, dust and other environmental stress factors. So it’s an effective sunscreen for both the city and the beach!
And finally, I find it affordable in terms of price, especially as I find it comparable in finish to the classic Anessa sunscreen, and it’s much cheaper.🙂

∎ Protection:
SPF 50+, PA++++

∎ Made in:

∎ Texture:
It’s a non-greasy, super-light fluid that spreads easily and absorbs very quickly. It leaves a rather matte, “dry touch” finish, almost powdery on the skin. Don’t forget to shake it well before use to distribute the filters more evenly! 😉

∎ UV filters:
– Zinc Oxide: mineral filter for UVA and UVB.
– Titanium Dioxide: mineral filter for UVA and UVB.
– Uvinul A Plus: chemical filter for UVA.
– Homosalate: chemical filter for UVB.
– Octisalate: chemical filter for UVB.
– Uvinul T 150: chemical filter for UVB.
– Octocrylene: chemical filter for UVA and UVB.

Dimethicone, water, zinc oxide, alcohol, diisopropyl sebacate, isododecane, octocrylene, ethylhexyl salicylate, C12-15 alkyl benzoate, PEG/PPG-9/2 dimethyl ether, zea mays (corn) starch, talc, silica, isopropyl myristate, diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate, titanium dioxide, PEG-9 polydimethylsiloxyethyl dimethicone, dextrin palmitate, glycerin, homosalate, bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine, sodium chloride, PEG/PPG-14/7 dimethyl ether, trimethylsiloxysilicate, dipotassium glycyrrhizate, camellia sinensis extract, potentilla erecta root extract, citrus unshiu peel extract, sodium acetylated hyaluronate, lauryl betaine, soluble collagen, ethylhexyl triazone, disteardimonium hectorite, PEG-10 dimethicone, isostearic acid, triethoxycaprylylsilane, polyglyceryl-6 polyricinoleate, aluminum hydroxide, stearic acid, trisodium EDTA, PEG-6, tocopherol, BHT, butylene glycol, bis-butyldimethicone polyglyceryl-3, sodium metabisulfite, phenoxyethanol, sodium benzoate, fragrance, synthetic fluorphlogopite.

∎ Alcohol?
Yes.

∎ Fragrance?
Yes, a fairly fresh, fruity-floral fragrance that doesn’t linger.

∎ Antioxidants?
Yes, purple tea, Citrus Unshiu and vitamin E.

∎ Other skincare ingredients in the formula:
Hydrating glycerine, betaine and collagen, and soothing liquorice extract.

∎ White cast?
It’s very slight, but on my fair skin it doesn’t show. Compared to the version from two years ago, it’s even less visible, I feel. It contains mineral filters, so if you have darker skin than me, it might be more visible on you.

∎ Irritating? Comedogenic?
Not on me.

∎ Mattifying?
Yes, it is. It does a pretty good job of regulating my excess shine during the day.

∎ Drying?
No, not on me.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
It’s a good makeup base. It’s quite a silicon-based formula, so it almost has a “primer” effect that beautifies and smoothes the skin, and the makeup sits perfectly on top. It also helps to reduce excess shine during the day, so makeup lasts longer!

∎ Would I repurchase?
Why not? Usually with Anessa, my favourite is the Mild Milk (the alcohol-free, fragrance-free version) which I’ll tell you about below, but this year, the new reformulation of the latter didn’t convince me as much as usual. However, this version of the classic Anessa Milk is much more convincing! 🙂
Indeed, the formula of this 2024 version of Anessa Milk has been improved and now offers even greater protection. It incorporates the new “Auto Repair” technology, which helps to reduce uneven patches in the sunscreen layer caused by facial movements during the day. Another innovation is “Auto Booster” technology, which activates in conditions of high humidity (over 78%) and temperatures above 28°C, improving the durability and uniformity of the sunscreen on the skin in intense, humid climates. So it’s the ideal sunscreen for physical activity outdoors in hot weather! So it’s perfect for outdoor activities and sports. The formula resists sweat and water, and sebum (for 80 minutes).
The new formula also contains a “Beautiful Skin Sun Essence” technology, which means that the formula is enriched with antioxidant-rich violet tea extract, for better skin protection and more radiance. It also protects the skin from pollution particles. And I have to say that I also appreciate its matte finish, which is ideal in summer.
For me, it works very well as a city sunscreen; it looks great under makeup and I find it very comfortable, not drying, even though it also has a mattifying effect. It’s true that it’s a bit expensive compared to the other sunscreens in this selection, but frankly, the formula is pretty amazing, it’s very innovative (and it comes at a price 😉 )!

Between $24 and $34 for 60ml.

∎ Protection:
SPF 50+, PA++++

∎ Made in:
Japan

∎ Texture:
It’s a fluid/milk that feels a little ‘oily’ at first, but spreads easily and absorbs very quickly, setting on the skin in just a few seconds. It leaves a rather matte, “dry touch” finish, almost powdery on the skin. Don’t forget to shake it well before using it for a better distribution of the filters! 🙂

∎ UV filters:
– Zinc Oxide: mineral filter for UVA and UVB.
– Titanium Dioxide: mineral filter for UVA and UVB.
– Uvinul A Plus: chemical filter for UVA.
– Uvinul T 150: chemical filter for UVB.
– Tinosorb S: chemical filter for UVA and UVB.

∎ Full ingredients list:
Water, dimethicone, diisopropyl sebacate, butylene glycol, caprylyl methicone, cetyl ethylhexanoate, titanium dioxide, pentaerythrityl tetraethylhexanoate, triethylhexanoin, diethylhexyl succinate, zinc oxide, dipropylene glycol, silica, glycerin, PEG-9 polydimethylsiloxyethyl dimethicone, diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate, bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine, PEG/PPG-14/7 dimethyl ether, sodium chloride, thiotaurine, potentilla erecta root extract, dipotassium glycyrrhizate, angelica keiskei leaf/stem extract, sodium acetylated hyaluronate, PEG-10 dimethicone, aluminum hydroxide, disteardimonium hectorite, ethylhexyl triazone, PEG-12 dimethicone, stearic acid, hydrogen dimethicone, beheneth-20, sodium citrate, citric acid, sodium metaphosphate, sodium metabisulfite, prunus yedoensis leaf extract, carbomer, trifluoropropyldimethyl/ trimethylsiloxysilicate, tocopherol, phenoxyethanol, benzoic acid, barium sulfate.

∎ Alcohol?
No.

∎ Fragrance?
No.

∎ Antioxidants?
Yes, it contains thiotaurine and vitamin E.

∎ Other skincare ingredients in the formula:
Hydrating glycerine, soothing cherry blossom extract and soothing liquorice extract.

∎ White cast?
A slight one, but on my fair skin it doesn’t show. Compared to the version from two years ago, it’s even less visible, I feel. It contains mineral filters, so if you have darker skin than me, it might be more visible on you..

∎ Irritating? Comedogenic?
Not on me; on the contrary, I find it soothing!

∎ Mattifying?
Yes, it is. It does a pretty good job of regulating my excess shine during the day.

∎ Drying?
I don’t necessarily find it drying on my combo skin, but it does tend to emphasize my dry skin areas.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
According to the brand description, it’s quite a silicone formula, so it should have a beautifying ‘primer’ effect and allow makeup to sit perfectly on top. Unfortunately, that’s not quite the experience I had with this new formula. On me, it tended to emphasize the texture of my skin, as well as the dry areas on my complexion, and it also had a slight tendency to cling to the foundation, even making it pill a little. In short, it’s not a dream combo with makeup…

∎ Would I repurchase?
I’m not so sure. Usually, Anessa Mild Milk is one of my go-to products, which I recommend all the time, but I’m not completely convinced by this new 2024 version. It tends to emphasize the flaws in my skin when I apply makeup over it. Perhaps it would be better suited to skin that’s less dehydrated than mine? If I use it without makeup, it works pretty well for me though!
It’s still an interesting formula though! Designed for babies and adults with sensitive skin, this 2024 version is now lighter and more comfortable on the skin than its 2021 predecessor. Featuring the new Smooth Protect Technology Air, it effectively disperses the zinc oxide and titanium dioxide powders in the aqueous phase. This reduces the amount of filters needed without compromising protection, resulting in a softer, lighter wearing sensation than before. It is also more transparent than the 2021 version. In addition, the Auto Booster technology in its formula automatically reacts to minerals in sweat and water to improve the durability and evenness of the sunscreen on the skin, while being more resistant to rubbing when swimming. Its formula resists sweat, water and sebum (for 80 minutes). This sunscreen also protects the skin against pollution particles.
In short, it’s a great concept on paper, and has the advantage of being suitable for sensitive skin, but it didn’t convince me when I used it with makeup. I’m going to keep it for those days when I need heavy protection but don’t need to wear makeup on top! 😉

∎ Antioxidants?
No.

∎ Other skincare ingredients in the formula:
The formula contains hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, and butylene glycol.

∎ White cast?
It contains a mineral filter but on me, it’s completely transparent. I find it incredible that this isn’t a 100% chemical sunscreen.

∎ Irritating? Comedogenic?
Not on me.

∎ Mattifying?
Yes, I’d say so. It also helps control my excess shine during the day, I find. I don’t look as shiny as usual.

∎ Drying?
No, not on my combination skin, but on dry skin, it might be slightly drying.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
It’s a good base for makeup, you can apply makeup very easily over it and it also helps it to last longer.

∎ Would I repurchase?
Certainly! I’ve been hearing about this sunscreen for years. I’m really pleased to have been able to get my hands on the latest reformulation to test it out, as it’s one of my favourites from this Japanese selection! It’s ideal for me in the summer; it’s comfortable to wear, very light weight, and helps to reduce my excess shine during the day.
This 2024 version has a new ‘Powder-in-Water’ formula that makes it more resistant to perspiration and more comfortable to wear. It offers the strongest, longest-lasting UV protection in the Biore UV range thanks to Athlizm’s exclusive “Tough Boost” technology and “Durable Outer Skin” formula. This technology creates a strong, grippy layer of UV protection that remains effective in extreme conditions, including heat of up to 40°C and 75% humidity, and resists heavy perspiration and rubbing. So it’s a sunscreen that works very well for outdoor activities, even in intense weather conditions. But for me, it also works very well for everyday use. And it’s affordable, which is always a plus! 😀

∎ Alcohol?
Yes.

∎ Fragrance?
Yes. A sweet, fruity scent, very pleasant. It wears off fairly quickly, which is my personal preference.

∎ Antioxidants?
No.

∎ Other skincare ingredients in the formula:
The formula contains hydrating ingredients such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and also soothing zinc.

∎ White cast?
It’s a light pink tint, a complexion correcting base that’s aimed mainly at fair skins who want a “porcelain skin” effect. I don’t think it will be suitable for darker skin tones, as it will probably give a white/grey cast.

∎ Irritating? Comedogenic?
Not on me.

∎ Mattifying?
Yes, I’d say so. I find that it helps to control my shine during the day and my makeup lasts longer as well.

∎ Drying?
No, quite the opposite. It’s rather comfortable and hydrating.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
It’s a great makeup base, of course! Foundation goes on top of it perfectly, smoothing out the skin’s texture, adding radiance and making make-up last longer.

∎ Would I repurchase?
Why not, as it’s a product I like, but I find it very small (25ml) and not cheap.
It’s a fairly versatile sunscreen, suitable for both the city and the beach. It’s very pleasant to use, very fresh when applied (it’s composed of 65% water). It’s a great makeup base, and used on its own, it gives a lovely rosy glow to fair complexions. The Sheer Clear Pink pigments and micro-fine pearls in the formula give a lovely glow to the complexion. It may not be suitable for medium to dark skin tones, however.
It’s also resistant to sweat, sebum and friction. It forms a flexible, long-lasting film that stays in place without transferring.
If only it wasn’t so tiny in size! 😅

In conclusion:

I absolutely adore Japanese sunscreens! And this year again, there were some amazing launches. I enjoyed most of the ones I tried, but if I have to choose, here are my 3 favourites:

– the formula is the same as last year, but it’s still a staple for me. The Rohto Mentholatum Skin Aqua UV Super Moisture Gel SPF 50+ PA++++ is the ideal sunscreen for everyday wear! Lightweight, comfortable and moisturising, it’s suitable for all skin types. It works equally well as a beach or city sunscreen, it’s suitable for both face and body… And I love its texture, so melting and pleasant! It’s very popular, and deservedly so.

– a great discovery this year, the new Nivea sunscreens, especially the Nivea UV Super Water Gel EX SPF 50+ PA++++ with its water-drenched texture! Like the previous one, it’s very versatile and very pleasant to use too!

– and finally, a friend for combination skin with excess shine in the summer, the Kosé Suncut UV Perfect Milk SPF 50+ PA++++ which has a “dry touch” and helps to regulate my excess shine during the day! I’ve finally had a chance to try this brand, and I understand its popularity. This one reminds me of Anessa, only cheaper! 😉

Two honorable mentions:

– the always great Shiseido Anessa Perfect UV Sunscreen Skincare Milk SPF 50+ PA++++ (version 2024) effective, resistant and pleasant to use. Not the cheapest, though.

– and the Bioré UV Athlizm Protect Essence SPF 50+ PA++++ (version 2024) which I’m delighted to have finally tried! It’s great for combination skin that gets very shiny, and perfect for summer!

This is it for the second part of my Sunscreen Guide 2024 (the first part is here if you haven’t read it yet: Face Sunscreen Guide 2024, Part 1: European sunscreens). The third and last part will be dedicated to Korean sunscreens. I ask you to be patient, because as usual, it’s the longest to write since this is the category where I test the most products. 😅

  1. Your work is incredible! Thanks for your explanatio’s for aller this produits.
    Thanks you very much!
That helps me a lot to choice my suncreen.
    Best wishes,

    Kim

    • Hi Jos,
As mentioned in the reviews, some of them are waterproof up to 80 minutes. So yes, you can use them to go swimming!
It’s recommended to re-apply after your swim though 🙂

    • Hi!
I guess it should be, except if your skin is sensitive to alcohol.
I can’t really guarantee it tho, because I’m only able to try it on my skin, which is combo and not too sensitive. 😬

  2. Did you do any body sunscreen review by any chance? I tried to search using the search function, but it gave me an error. Thanks

    • Hi Jos,
No, I don’t do reviews for body sunscreens. I don’t use them as much as the ones for the face. I don’t really go to the beach or the pool in summer. And to protect my arms, I just use my face sunscreens usually. Sorry I couldn’t be more useful! 😊
