Face Sunscreen Guide 2023 Part 3 Korean Sunscreens

Face Sunscreen Guide 2023, Part 3: Korean sunscreens

Intro
At a glance

My 2023 face sunscreen guide, part 3: I tell you all about my tests of Korean sunscreen products!

Finally, it’s here, as promised: the conclusion of my Face Sunscreen Guide 2023, this time focusing on Korean sunscreens; my beloved! Once again this year, I’ve tried many products (about twenty, this part gets longer every year lol), and I’m delighted to share my discoveries with you. Meet them all now! 😃

Don’t forget, you can also check out the guide’s first two sections that cover European and Japanese sunscreens. 🙂

It should not come as a surprise to those who are familiar with my content that I hold Korean sunscreen products in high esteem. They are ideal for everyday protection as their extremely lightweight textures make them very comfortable to use, causing no visible difference to makeup application.

Korean sun creams are always helpful throughout the entire year. South Korean people have made sun protection a part of their daily routine, and you can notice the difference in the products’ quality! They are comfortable to use and work well with makeup on top.

Moreover, if you prefer mineral sunscreens like me, you will definitely enjoy this article. I have featured a considerable number of mineral sunscreens in my selection. 😍
I find them especially useful because they help me keep my combo skin more matte.

Korean mineral sunscreens generally have lightweight textures and rarely cause a white cast (unless they are marketed as “tone-up” sunscreens, which are very popular in Korea). They are also less drying than conventional mineral sunscreens, which is the reason I love to try several each year!

I really like to alternate between mineral and chemical sunscreens depending on the day, as I find that mineral sunscreens are very gentle on my skin, especially when, like me, you use a sunscreen every day of the year.

I like Korean chemical sunscreens, as they are often very hydrating without being heavy or greasy. Also, with Korean products, you can find some really wonderful textures that you can’t find anywhere else. Like mousse sunscreens, for example! And this year, I’ve even got to try two of these innovative products! 😆

A reminder: if you’re curious about how I choose my sunscreen products, my skin type, preferences and expectations, I suggest you read the section entitled “How I choose my sunscreens (in 2023)” in my first article Face Sunscreen Guide 2023, part 1 (it will help you understand my criteria for choosing so you can compare them to yours). However, I must point out that if you have very dry skin and prefer richer textures, my selection might not be for you. 😉

Don't miss out on new content we publish.
Hey, it could be what helps you find the exact skincare product you were looking for.
We wouldn't want you missing out on that now, would we 🙂

Note:
I already mentioned this last year, but I’ll say it again: Korean sunscreens come out quite late in the year, which is one reason why I’m publishing this article at the end of summer.
And some products I’m talking about are so new that they’re not yet available on the big, well-known Asian eshops like YesStyle or Stylevana.
Personally, I often shop at Olive Young, which is an ultra-popular boutique in Korea and which opened an English-language site a few years ago. Their site delivers internationally, so it can be a practical option for many of you. As for customs duties, delivery times, etc., you’ll have to ask them directly, as these fees will vary depending on the country. For Dubai and the UAE, delivery is fairly quick (10-15 days max), and I have customs charges each time, but they’re not huge.
I also have a promotional code for the Olive Young website, which is BONNIE100 and gives you 5% off your order. 😉

So this year, I’ve selected 20 Korean sunscreen products to test: 8 minerals, 9 chemicals and 3 hybrids (with both mineral and chemical filters).

I should warn you that this article will probably be very long. If you want, you can click directly on the product you’re interested in using the “Jump To” menu at the top of the page if you don’t want to read the whole thing! 😉

Face Sunscreen Guide 2022, Part 3: Korean sunscreens Skincare Face Sunscreen Guide 2022, Part 3: Korean sunscreens You’ve been waiting for it. Here it is: my third and last part of my Face Sunscreen Guide 2022, which this time is dedicated to Korean sunscreens, my favorites! This year, as usual, I tested a lot of them, and I’m sharing all my discoveries with you. Here we go! 😃 Read more

Fun fact:

Before presenting my selection, I have a little anecdote to tell you.

I mentioned it in my previous articles on Korean sunscreens, particularly this one. There was a lot of fuss a few years ago about Korean sunscreens. I’m not going to go into detail here, as I explained everything in my article in 2021. In short, the consequence of all this is that many Korean brands have turned to the same renowned Korean sunscreen specialist manufacturer to formulate their sunscreen products, the company Kolmar Korea.

As a result, many Korean sunscreen formulas, particularly chemical sunscreens, have ended up looking very similar over the last year or two. You may have noticed if you’re observant, but in 2022, there were a lot of versions of moisturising chemical sunscreens with the same sunscreens (Uvinul A Plus, Uvinul T 150, Tinosorb S and Uvasorb HEB), and the same characteristics: fresh, moisturising texture, satin finish, moisturising skincare ingredients.

It’s quite common for cosmetics brands to work through another manufacturer to design certain products (not all brands have their own labs, this is the case all over the world, not just in Korea). But in general, brands avoid working with THE SAME lab to request THE SAME product.

But over the last two years, that’s more or less what happened in South Korea. I suppose I’m in a pretty good position to observe this, given all the Korean sunscreens I’ve been testing over the last few years, but during some of my trials, I sometimes had the impression of trying the same product over and over again… For example, the ever-popular Beauty Of Joseon Relief Sun Rice + Probiotics, or Korea’s best-selling Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturizing Sun Cream, to name just the most popular (I’ve also heard this of the Skin1004 Madagascar Centella Hyalu-cica Water-fit Sun Serum too, but I haven’t tried it). These products really have the same base formula, and you can feel it.

Now it’s not the end of the world, is it? Nothing serious, and all things considered, they’re pretty good sunscreens, and very popular ones at that. But I have to say that I hope the brands will try to differentiate themselves a bit more in the future…

And you’ll see in my selection, there are still a few formulas of this type, because they’re hard to escape, even if I’ve done my best to find you products that are a little different! 🙂

And in fact, let’s get started right away!

100% mineral sunscreens:

My favourites at the moment, for summer, because they usually leave a lovely matter finish than the chemical filter-based sunscreens, and they’re very comfortable to wear every day in my experience! And for those with drier skin types, mineral sunscreens can also emphasize the drier areas of the face.

Dr.G Green Mild Up Skin Sun Lotion SPF50+ PA++++:

∎ Price:
Around $32 for 50 ml.

∎ Protection:
SPF 50+, PA++++

∎ Made in:
South Korea.

∎ Manufacturer:
Kolmar Korea.

∎ Texture:
A very fluid emulsion that absorbs easily. It hydrates well and leaves the skin feeling very comfortable. If you have dry skin, you’ll love it!

∎ UV filters:
– Zinc oxide: mineral filter for UVA and UVB rays.

∎ Full ingredients list:
Water, Zinc Oxide, Coco-Caprylate/Caprate, Caprylyl Methicone, Propylheptyl Caprylate, Propanediol, Butyloctyl Salicylate, Cyclohexasiloxane, Niacinamide, Butylene Glycol Dicaprylate/Dicaprate, Polyglyceryl-3 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, Polyglyceryl-2 Dipolyhydroxystearate, Centella Asiatica Extract, Bacopa Monnieri Extract, Disiloxane, C13-15 Alkane, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Pinus Pinaster Bark Extract, Caesalpinia Spinosa Fruit Extract, Kappaphycus Alvarezii Extract, Buddleja Officinalis Flower Extract, Lauryl Polyglyceryl-3 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Polyglyceryl-3 Polyricinoleate, Magnesium Sulfate, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, 1,2-Hexanediol, Trihydroxystearin, Silica, Neopentyl Glycol Diethylhexanoate, Glyceryl Caprylate, Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Adenosine, Tocopherol.

∎ Alcohol?
No.

∎ Fragrance?
No.

∎ Antioxidants?
Yes, there are, and not just a little! There’s Pycnogenol, a powerful antioxidant which is the star ingredient of the Dr.G brand. It’s a natural plant extract, derived from the bark of the maritime pine tree. It also contains vitamin E and Buddleja Officinalis flower extract. The formula contains niacinamide and Centella Asiatica on top.

∎ Other notable skincare ingredients in the formula:
Anti-ageing adenosine, a repairing red algae extract and, as mentioned above, niacinamide and Centella Asiatica, which are also soothing.

∎ White cast?
Really light on me, but my skin is fair. On me, when I massage it in, it disappears and becomes almost transparent. But it’s a mineral sunscreen; on darker skin tones, it might show up more than on my fair skin.

∎ Mattifying?
No, it’s a luminous finish that becomes even more dewy throughout the day.

∎ Drying?
No, on the contrary, I find it moisturising.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
It’s a good makeup base, foundation is easy to apply over it and it doesn’t emphasize areas of dry skin. However, it’s not particularly mattifying, so don’t forget the powder if you have combination skin!

∎ Would I repurchase?
No, probably not. I really like its fluid, melting texture, but I’m not the ideal target for this sunscreen product. I think it’s aimed at drier skin types than mine.
The formula is great though, with all its skincare ingredients, and I find it hydrating and soothing, which I can appreciate in winter, for example. If you like a more satin finish, check it out, you should enjoy it if you’re a fan of more comfortable mineral sunscreens! The white cast is not very noticeable (as always, I’m speaking for myself and from the point of view of someone with a pale skin, I insist!), and I think it’s a good makeup base too. In short, a good product, but not for me. 🙂

∎ Alcohol?
No.

∎ Fragrance?
No.

∎ Antioxidants?
Yes, plenty: pycnogenol, a powerful antioxidant which is the star ingredient of the brand Dr.G. It’s a natural plant extract from the bark of the maritime pine. It also contains vitamin E, Houttuynia Cordata extract, Buddleja Officinalis flower extract and Centella Asiatica. It also contains Houttuynia Cordata extract, which is a soothing ingredient, and flavonoids, such as ectoin and rutin.

∎ Other notable skincare ingredients in the formula:
A repairing red algae extract, Centella Asiatica, soothing ferments and Houttuynia Cordata extract, also very soothing. Finally, there’s hyaluronic acid for a hydrating effect.

∎ White cast?
A little at first, but then this fades as you massage the product in and it’s barely noticeable anymore (at least not on my fair skin). It’s quite satisfying to see it disappear when you massage it in!

∎ Irritating? Comedogenic?
No, on the contrary, it is very soothing.

∎ Mattifying?
A little less than the 2020 version, but it’s still a semi-matte finish, and it doesn’t make me look any shinier than usual. And I have to admit that I also find it more comfortable than the old version.

∎ Drying?
No, on the contrary, I find it rather hydrating.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
It’s a good makeup base, and foundation is easy to apply over it. Its semi-matte finish is great for improving makeup hold. And it doesn’t emphasize dry patches.

∎ Would I repurchase?
Yes, very probably, as I’ve been buying it almost every year since I discovered it 4 years ago! It’s one of my favourite mineral sunscreens, and even though the brand reformulates it regularly (the latest version was released two years ago), I still find it to my liking!
This 2023 version is packed with antioxidants, soothing and hydrating ingredients. It’s an ideal sunscreen for sensitive skin! Its texture is quite similar to the last version, rather creamy and hydrating, but without being greasy at all. It’s a good makeup base. Even though it’s not the most mattifying sunscreen in my selection, I think it does a pretty good job of keeping shine at bay.
I also like the fact that it leaves a very minimal white cast (for my fair skin, of course!) and it’s very comfortable to wear every day! It’s still one of my favourite daily mineral sunscreens. For me, it deserves its success, and it’s a staple!

I wouldn’t say it’s super mattifying, but it does help to regulate my sebum a little during the day.

It’s very minimal. If I massage it a bit, you can barely see it on my fair skin.

∎ Irritating? Comedogenic?
No, it’s quite soothing.

∎ Mattifying?
Yes, quite. It has a velvety finish, blurring pores and helping to limit shine during the day.

∎ Drying?
No, I find it hydrating.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
It’s a great makeup base for a combination to oily skin. It leaves the skin matte and improves makeup lasting power by regulating oiliness. It doesn’t feel too heavy on the skin and it has a nice blurring effect, plus it’s super lightweight.

∎ Would I repurchase?
You bet! I really like the formula, which contains soothing, hydrating and regulating skincare ingredients. I love the matte, pore-blurring finish, and it helps to limit shine more during the day, which I particularly appreciate, especially in summer. It has a slight whitening effect, which I prefer to mention, so it’s more for fair skin. On me, it’s not too noticeable, and under makeup, it disappears completely.
In fact, it’s great when used under makeup: it has an invisible, smoothing finish, and helps makeup last longer, which is always a good thing, especially at this time of year. But even when worn without makeup, it also makes skin look really pretty thanks to its pore-blurring effect. And as an added bonus, it has a lovely aromatic scent thanks to the essential oils it contains. I really like it! 😉

It’s quite a good makeup base; makeup applies well over it and it doesn’t emphasize dry patches. However, if your skin is prone to look shiny, don’t forget to use powder! 🙂

∎ Would I repurchase?
Probably not. It’s a rather pleasant formula to use, and it contains some interesting skincare ingredients, but the finish is a little too dewy for my personal taste. It also has a slightly white cast that remains discreet on me, but I still have to massage quite a lot for it to fade. In short, I’m probably nitpicking, but I think there are better options available on the market.
If your skin is drier than mine, this might suit you better! 😉

A lightweight cream that takes a little massaging, but absorbs quickly enough to melt into the skin, leaving it feeling comfortable and light on the skin.

∎ UV filters:
– Titanium Dioxide: mineral filter for UVA and UVB rays.
– Zinc Oxide: mineral filter for UVA and UVB rays.

∎ Full ingredients list:
Water, Zinc Oxide, Cyclohexasiloxane, Caprylyl Methicone, Butyloctyl Salicylate, Propylheptyl Caprylate, Butylene Glycol, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Methyl Trimethicone, Lauryl Polyglyceryl-3 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, Sodium Potassium Aluminum Silicate, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Magnesium Sulfate, Lauryl Polyglyceryl-3 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Polyglyceryl-2 Dipolyhydroxystearate, Dimethiconol, Trisiloxane, 1,2-Hexanediol, Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Silica, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Dicaprylyl Carbonate, Caprylyl Glycol, Glyceryl Caprylate, Iron Oxide Yellow, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium Hyaluronate, Iron Oxide Red, Iron Oxide Black, Tocopherol, Hydroxystearic Acid, Glycerin, Aronia Arbutifolia Extract, Citrus Unshiu Peel Extract, Lactobacillus Ferment, Nelumbium Speciosum Flower Extract, Stellaria Media (Chickweed) Extract, Chamaecyparis Obtusa Leaf Extract.

∎ Alcohol?
No.

∎ Fragrance?
No.

∎ Antioxidants?
Yes, vitamin E and Citrus Unshiu extract.

∎ Other notable skincare ingredients in the formula:
Hydrating glycerine and hyaluronic acid, soothing fermented ingredients (Lactobacillus Ferment) and plant extracts from Jeju Island with repairing properties.

∎ White cast?
The formula is slightly tinted, a fairly light ivory shade. But the pigment concentration is rather low, so it doesn’t even have the coverage of a tinted moisturiser. That being said, it does slightly even out the complexion, so it looks great worn on its own without makeup.

∎ Irritating? Comedogenic?
No, on the contrary, it is soothing.

∎ Mattifying?
Yes, quite. It has a velvety finish, helps blur pores and limits shine during the day..

∎ Drying?
No, on the contrary, I find it rather hydrating.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
It’s a great makeup base for combination to oily skin, leaving the skin subtly even-toned thanks to its colour and its semi-matte finish that helps the makeup to last longer by regulating the shine. It doesn’t feel too heavy on the skin and doesn’t emphasize texture – it’s super lightweight.

∎ Would I repurchase?
Probably! I really like the formula, which I find comfortable and soothing. I love its velvety finish, and it helps to limit excess shine during the day, which I particularly appreciate, especially in summer. It’s slightly tinted, but its shade will suit more fair skin. On my skin, it helps to even out my complexion naturally, and I quite like it!
It’s also great to use under makeup; it has a beautifying finish and helps the makeup to last longer, which is always a good thing, especially in summer. Even when worn without makeup, its finish and the fact that it’s slightly tinted make it look really pretty on the skin. It really is a great option!

100% chemical sunscreens:

The textures of chemical sunscreens are generally very pleasant, lightweight, and imperceptible on the skin. Most of them are completely transparent, which is very nice! Some of them have a glowy finish, so if you tend to get shiny during the day, don’t forget your blotting powder! If you have a dry skin though, you’ll probably really love them! 🙂

Between $23 and $37 for 50ml.

∎ Protection:

∎ Made in:
South Korea.

∎ Manufacturer:
Kolmar Korea.

∎ Texture:
A very fluid, melting cream that contains tiny capsules inside (you can barely see them, and hardly feel them on your skin). When you massage the product into your skin, the little hydrating capsules burst open and the formula leaves your skin feeling fresh, hydrated and comfortable.

∎ UV filters:
– Uvinul A Plus: chemical filter for UVA.
– Uvinul T 150: chemical filter for UVB.
– Tinosorb M: chemical filter for UVA and UVB.
– Uvasorb HEB: chemical filter for UVA and UVB.

∎ Full ingredients list:
Water, Dibutyl Adipate, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Propanediol, Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate, Butyloctyl Salicylate, Ethylhexyl Triazone, Niacinamide, Methylene Bis-Benzotriazolyl Tetramethylbutylphenol, Caprylyl Methicone, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Diethylhexyl Butamido Triazone, 1,2-Hexanediol, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Pelargonium Graveolens Extract, Melia Azadirachta Leaf Extract, Melia Azadirachta Flower Extract, Coccinia Indica Fruit Extract, Opuntia Ficus-Indica Flower Extract, Solanum Melongena (Eggplant) Fruit Extract, Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) Root Extract, Corallina Officinalis Extract, Ocimum Sanctum Leaf Extract, Juniperus Virginiana Oil, Litsea Cubeba Fruit Oil, Vetiveria Zizanoides Root Oil, Elettaria Cardamomum Seed Oil, Brassica Napus (Rapeseed) Seed Oil, Camelina Sativa Seed Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Pentylene Glycol, Behenyl Alcohol, Poly C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate, Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, Decyl Glucoside, Tromethamine, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Carbomer, Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate, Polyacrylate Crosspolymer-6, Ethylhexylglycerin, Adenosine, Xanthan Gum, Allantoin, Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid, Hydrolyzed Sodium Hyaluronate.

∎ Alcohol?
No.

∎ Fragrance?
Yes, and it’s very subtle. You can barely smell it.

∎ Antioxidants?
Yes, niacinamide, and turmeric.

∎ Other notable skincare ingredients in the formula:
As well as the aforementioned niacinamide, which has anti-ageing and brightening properties, there’s anti-ageing adenosine, soothing allantoin, which is combined here with prickly pear extract to repair the skin barrier. There’s also moisturising glycerin, nourishing jojoba and rapeseed oils, and the already mentioned little capsules containing hydrating hyaluronic acid.

∎ White cast?
No, it’s transparent.

∎ Irritating? Comedogenic?
No, I find it quite soothing, on the contrary.

∎ Mattifying?
It leaves a natural “skin like” finish, and doesn’t especially mattify the skin but doesn’t accentuate my shiny skin areas too much during the day either. It actually works great with my combo skin.

∎ Drying?
No, rather the opposite, it’s hydrating.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
It’s a good makeup base, and the foundation applies perfectly over it. For combination skin, you’ll probably need to touch up with powder during the day, but to be honest, I don’t find that it makes my skin look any shinier than usual.

∎ Would I repurchase?
Yes, definitely! I really like the formula, which is rich in hydrating skincare ingredients, and the texture, very fresh and pleasant. The finish is natural and I don’t look shiny after a few hours, which I particularly appreciate with my combination skin! And it’s silly, but you know me, I love cosmetic gimmicks, so I’m a big fan of the little hydrating capsules, even though you can barely see them! But even without them, I think it’s a really nice sunscreen, super fresh and hydrating, without being too heavy! 🙂

∎ Alcohol?
No.

∎ Fragrance?
No.

∎ Antioxidants?
Yes, several: niacinamide, purslane, manchuria violet extract and chinese lycium chinense fruit extract

∎ Other notable skincare ingredients in the formula:
The formula has plenty to offer! Moisturising Aloe Vera and glycerin, anti-ageing adenosine, soothing allantoin, panthenol and liquorice, anti-ageing and brightening niacinamide, and soothing barberry root extract.

∎ White cast?
No, it’s transparent.

∎ Irritating? Comedogenic?
No, it’s a soothing formula.

∎ Mattifying?
No, not really. It leaves more of a satin finish that will probably suit drier skin types more.

∎ Drying?
No, rather the opposite, it’s well moisturizing, even a little emollient on me.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
It’s a good makeup base, and foundation goes on well over it. However, on my combination skin, it reduces the staying power of my makeup, which gets very shiny at the end of the day, and even separates. It looks quite patchy at the end of the day…

∎ Would I repurchase?
No, probably not. In fact, I wouldn’t have purchased it on my own, but I got it as part of a Wishtrend kit that I ordered for Black Friday, along with other products that I was more interested in. This is clearly a sunscreen for people with dry skin, and I knew that before I tried it. My test confirmed it. Even this winter (I received it last November), it was too much for my combination skin. I admit that the formula is nice, that being said. There are lots of interesting skincare ingredients, and it’s alcohol-free and fragrance-free, so it’s suitable for even the most sensitive skin. If you like a satin finish, this should do the trick! But for me, it’s not suited to my preferences! 😉

∎ Fragrance?
Yes.

∎ Antioxidants?
Yes, niacinamide.

∎ Other notable skincare ingredients in the formula:
Lots of hydrating ingredients: glycerin, trehalose, honey, royal jelly, beta glucan, fig extract… as well as soothing panthenol and allantoin, purifying propolis and anti-ageing adenosine.

∎ White cast?
No, it’s transparent.

∎ Irritating? Comedogenic?
No, it’s a soothing formula.

∎ Mattifying?
No, not really. It leaves more of a satin finish.

∎ Drying?
No, rather the opposite, it is well moisturizing, even a little emollient on me. Drier skin types should like this one.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
With some foundations, it’s a good base for makeup, and the foundation applies well over it. With others, it can tend to “cling” to the skin, emphasizing pores and sometimes even pilling. Another thing is that if you have combination skin, it doesn’t prevent your skin from looking shiny – quite the opposite in fact. I have to apply more powder than usual when I wear it.

∎ Would I repurchase?
I don’t think so. The texture is very pleasant to apply, and I also love the fragrance (a subtle hint of floral honey). But the finish is clearly too satiny for me. I tried it in winter, when I was travelling in Europe, and it was still too much for my combination skin. If you have dry skin, however, you might like this sunscreen! The formula is packed with skincare ingredients, which is always a plus. It’s also completely transparent, so it’s suitable for all skin tones.

∎ Irritating? Comedogenic?
Not on me.

∎ Mattifying?
It leaves a natural “skin like” finish, and doesn’t particularly mattify, but it won’t make my shine look too shiny during the day either.

∎ Drying?
No, rather the opposite, it’s hydrating.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
It’s a good base for makeup, and foundation applies perfectly well over it. It doesn’t prevent the skin from shiny looking, though, but it doesn’t make it oilier either.

∎ Would I repurchase?
Why not! It’s a good option, quite affordable in terms of price and suited to my combination skin.
The texture is light and fresh, reminding me a bit of my Japanese sunscreens (Bioré Aqua Rich Watery Essence in particular). If you have normal/combination and dehydrated skin, you’ll love it. Also, it’s a completely transparent sunscreen, so it works on all skin tones. The brand promises a refreshing “cooling” effect and I have to say it’s true, and it’s very pleasant to apply, especially in the summer! 🙂

∎ Would I repurchase?
If I hadn’t already reviewed the sunscreen above, the SNP UV Perfect Air-Cool Sun Cream SPF50+ PA++++, I probably would have told you this:
“Yes, why not buy it again! It’s a good option, quite affordable in price and suited to my combination skin.
The texture is light and fresh, reminding me a little of my Japanese sunscreens (Bioré Aqua Rich Watery Essence in particular). If you have normal/combination and dehydrated skin, you’ll love it. What’s more, it’s a completely transparent sunscreen, so it works on all skin colours. The brand promises a refreshing ‘cooling’ effect and I have to say that it’s true, and it’s very pleasant to apply, especially in summer! :)”
But I really had the impression that I was using the same formula as the SNP, and on closer inspection and comparing the ingredients lists, I realised that they were super similar (and made by the same manufacturer, Kolmar Korea, strangely enough lol)! The SNP formula has a few more skincare ingredients, and the price is also lower, so my advice would be to choose the SNP over this one 😉.
In truth, I know it depends a lot on how accessible one or the other is to you, but I wanted you to know! In short, for me, the formulas of the SNP and the Cell Fusion C are very similar, and they’re both good! 🙂

∎ Alcohol?
No.

∎ Fragrance?
No, but the product still has quite a strong scent. It has that characteristic smell of American chemical sunscreens (which I personally don’t like at all).

∎ Antioxidants?
Yes, skullcap root, green tea and vitamin E.

∎ Other notable skincare ingredients in the formula:
Anti-ageing adenosine, glycerin for hydration, and liquorice extract and panthenol for a soothing effect.

∎ White cast?
No, it’s transparent.

∎ Irritating? Comedogenic?
Not on my skin, but the strong scent stings my eyes.

∎ Mattifying?
No, it’s the opposite – it leaves a very glowy finish.

∎ Drying?
No, rather the opposite, it’s nourishing/ emollient.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
It will be perfect for dry skin, but on me and my combination skin, it decreases the staying power of my foundation unfortunately, and makes me look like a greasy mess after a few hours. It’s just too rich for me.

∎ Would I repurchase?
No, it’s not for me. Its texture is too rich for my dehydrated combination skin, even in winter. And I’m not a fan of its fragrance, which smells like old-school American sunscreen (I don’t like it at all). The smell is so strong that it stings my eyes!
Actually, when I found out that this sunscreen was the result of a collaboration between Wishtrend and Amorepacific, I thought at first that they’d developed a sunscreen specifically for the American market, with sun filters authorised there (because the USA is behind the rest of the world when it comes to sun filters authorised on its market; that’s why I rarely talk about American sunscreens, there are better, more modern options in other markets, IMO). But when I looked at the list of ingredients, and the sun filters in the formula, I saw that it did contain “new generation” filters. I was really surprised, because that’s not really how I felt when I used it!
It’s clearly not my favourite sunscreen in this selection, as you’ll have gathered. But if you like sunscreens with rich textures, no white cast and that leave a glowy finish, you may appreciate it more than I do! 🙂

∎ Alcohol?
Yes.

∎ Fragrance?
Yes, a floral scent that evokes a hint of ginseng, very subtle and that doesn’t linger!

∎ Antioxidants?
Yes, ginseng, niacinamide, olive oil and vitamin E.

∎ Other notable skincare ingredients in the formula:
Several extracts of ginseng with regenerating and emollient properties, anti-ageing adenosine, soothing and radiance-enhancing anti-ageing niacinamide, hydrating glycerin and soothing, anti-dehydrating jasmine oil.

∎ White cast?
No, it’s completely transparent.

∎ Irritant? Comedogenic?
Not on me.

∎ Mattifying?
Not really! The texture is lightweight and non-greasy; it gives a plumped and hydrated look to the skin. It has a slight glowy effect, but in a luminous sense, not really greasy. This product does make me look a bit shiny during the day, but that’s manageable. If you have combination skin, don’t forget your blotting powder! 😉

∎ Drying?
Not at all, it’s quite moisturizing on the contrary.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
Makeup applies perfectly over it. It’s a good makeup base. But if you have combination skin, don’t forget your blotting powder!

∎ Would I repurchase?
The AHC sunscreen I told you about two years ago was such a unique and innovative product that its texture and concept inspired other brands… Including this Beauty Of Joseon sunscreen!
It’s clearly a similar product, even if the formula is a little simpler, and a little more nourishing too. But texture-wise, it’s pretty much the same product (and it comes from the same manufacturer, Cosmax). I would say, however, that the texture of the Beauty Of Joseon is a little richer, probably better suited to drier skin types. But it’s still a fairly fresh gel, which melts into the skin and is easily absorbed, leaving the skin feeling plump and comfortable. For dehydrated skin, it’s great (which is really the case for me at the moment with the non-stop air conditioning in my flat)! As with AHC, the little capsules in its texture contain UV filters.
One notable difference with the AHC sunscreen is that this one is more affordable: it’s cheaper, for a larger capacity and it’s also easier to find (yes, even in Europe, I’ve put a link to the Little Wonderland eshop which is in Europe). I really like this type of texture, which I find super pleasant to use, but in the same style, I think I prefer the Goodal sunscreen serum, which I told you about last year, which has the same concept of a gel serum with little capsules (and which is made by the same manufacturer). The texture is lighter, which suits me better. It’s more this one that I would repurchase, instead of the Beauty Of Joseon sunscreen 🙂.

South Korea.

∎ Manufacturer:
Kolmar Korea.

∎ Texture:
A weird mousse that looks a bit like cottage cheese, or ‘faisselle’, if you know what I mean (yes, I’m referencing a French cheese, of course I am lol). It’s super fun and enjoyable! And it’s very cold, which is quite surprising when you first apply it! But after the initial surprise, it’s very easy to apply and feels silky and melting on the skin. It’s also quite emollient, so the skin is really comfortable afterwards!

∎ Alcohol?
Non.

∎ Fragrance?
Yes, a subtle creamy fruity scent, really nice.

∎ Antioxidants?
Yes, several: a vitamin C derivative (Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate), nacinamide, Mandshurica violet extract and vitamin E.

∎ Other notable skincare ingredients in the formula:
Quite a lot! Niacinamide and acetyl glucosamine to boost radiance; hyaluronic acid, Aloe Vera, beta glucan, sucrose and glycerin to hydrate; anti-ageing adenosine; and soothing Lactobacillus Ferment and panthenol.

∎ White cast?
No, it’s transparent.

∎ Irritating? Comedogenic?
Not on me. I find it comfortable and nice to wear.

∎ Mattifying?
No, not really. But curiously, while I find it quite emollient when I apply it, it sets after a while, and it doesn’t make my skin more shiny than usual during the day.

∎ Drying?
No, quite the contrary, it’s moisturizing.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
The foundation applies quite well over it, but it can have a slight tendency to cause pilling in certain areas. Nothing dramatic, but I preferred to point it out.

∎ Would I repurchase?
And why not! It’s a very original sunscreen product, and you know that’s one of my guilty pleasures. To be honest, I had a hard time finding it, but I couldn’t wait to try it out!
Its special texture is really surprising. You just have to know how to manage the amount of product to apply (for the face and neck, it’s the equivalent of a walnut-sized amount, which I apply in 2 or 3 layers). Its ‘faisselle mousse’ texture literally melts into the skin on application, giving an almost icy effect. I assure you, it doesn’t last, but personally, I found it very pleasant and quite surprising!
I need about a walnut-sized amount of product for my face and neck, and I usually apply it in two successive layers so it’s easier. After a few minutes, the product sets and becomes almost semi-matte. This formula is as comfortable as a skincare product. It also works quite well with makeup on top. It does have a tendency to make makeup pill a little, but it’s not always the case and it’s not too bad.
It works really well on my combination skin, which is very dehydrated at the moment, and if your skin is drier than mine, you’ll probably like it even more than I do! However, as I said above, it’s a complicated product to get hold of. So far, I’ve only seen it on eBay. It’s typically the kind of product you’d have to get directly from Korea for the moment…

∎ Alcohol?
Yes.

∎ Fragrance?
Yes.

∎ Antioxidants?
Yes, niacinamide.

∎ Other notable skincare ingredients in the formula:
Anti-ageing adenosine and several soothing ingredients: allantoin, panthenol and fermented yeast extract.

∎ White cast?
No, it’s transparent.

∎ Irritating? Comedogenic?
Not on me.

∎ Mattifying?
Yes, I find it helps to control my excess shine, although it’s not the mattiest sunscreen I’ve tested. It has a semi-matte finish, but only after it has set; just after application, it has an almost satin finish. But fortunately for my combination skin, it becomes more matte as it dries.

∎ Drying?
No, it’s comfortable.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
It’s a good base for makeup. Makeup applies well over it, and it helps it last longer.

∎ Would I repurchase?
Maybe, but it’s so hard to find that I doubt it, in all honesty. 😅
I still couldn’t wait to try it out! Its airy mousse texture is really nice. You just have to know how to manage the amount of product to apply (for the face and neck, it’s the equivalent of a large golf ball) and the mousse texture literally melts into the skin on application and sets quite quickly.
To avoid getting it in my hair, I apply it in small successive layers, which is easier. After a few minutes, the product sets and becomes semi-matte. The formula is very light and comfortable, and works well with makeup. The brand promises a mattifying and cooling effect, which I haven’t really noticed in use, to be honest.
But if I had to choose between this sunscreen mousse and the one from AHC, I think I’d prefer the latter. It’s strange because at first, I thought the lightness of the TirTir would appeal to me more (the AHC one is a bit more emollient), but in use, I find the AHC easier to use with its weird faiselle/cottage cheese texture, it’s less messy compared to the TirTir. And I love the cooling effect when I apply the AHC too. Ultimately, they’re both semi-matte, which is something I appreciate.
Now, both sunscreen mousses are still quite hard to find, so unless you’re planning a trip to Korea, one won’t really be any easier to find than the other, I’m afraid.

Hybrid/ combo formulas (with both mineral and chemical filters):

The “heavy-duty” formulas. I use them when I want to be sure I’m very well protected, and if I know, I’m going to be out in the sun for a bit. With the three products I discuss below, they also have the benefit of all being waterproof, so you can use them for outdoor activities, not just as city sunscreens. Of course, you’ll need to reapply at least every two hours, if you’re sweating a lot or after swimming, for maximum protection.

∎ Alcohol?
Yes.

∎ Fragrance?
Yes, a very aquatic fragrance, which I don’t love.

∎ Antioxidants?
Yes, several: ascorbic acid/pure vitamin C, vitamin E, purslane, coenzyme Q10, copper peptides.

∎ Other notable skincare ingredients in the formula:
Hydrating glycerin, cholesterol for comfort and skin barrier repair, witch hazel to soothe, and anti-ageing, soothing copper peptides.

∎ White cast?
A slight white cast on my fair skin, but it fades when you massage it in. Under makeup, it doesn’t show at all on me. However, it may be more noticeable if your skin is darker than mine.

∎ Irritating? Comedogenic?
No, not on me.

∎ Mattifying?
It leaves a fairly semi-matte finish, and my skin doesn’t look any shinier than usual with it.

∎ Drying?
No, it’s pretty comfortable on me.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
The makeup applies quite well over it, but sometimes it tends to make the foundation pill, even if it isn’t always the case.

∎ Would I repurchase?
Probably not, no, but I’m nitpicking a bit. It’s a pretty good product overall. The formula is quite complete, with plenty of skincare ingredients, and it’s very versatile as it works equally well for the city or the beach.
But I’m not a fan of its aquatic scent, I think it could be more matte (especially as it’s in its name), and the fact that it sometimes makes my makeup pill bothers me a bit.
And then, let’s be honest, it’s mainly that, in the same style of products, I prefer the two sunscreens below, which have the same benefits for a formula that I much prefer!
But I have to admit, it’s still a pretty good option overall! 🙂

It’s already done! I discovered this sunscreen last winter thanks to Odile Monod, and it really is a gem! On the one hand, it’s very protective and waterproof, but it’s also super pleasant to wear thanks to the skincare ingredients it contains. It absorbs really well on me and doesn’t leave a white cast. And it has a semi-matte finish all day long, so I can use it all year round, even in the summer when it’s hot and humid! This is the one I took with me in my travel kit, alternating with the CNP, which I’ll tell you about next. It matches perfectly with all my foundations; it ticks all my boxes, I love it. On top of that, it comes in a large size (70 or 100ml, which you can often have together in a set). In short, it’s a new favourite!

Without a doubt! Like the Isa Knox sunscreen above, it has become a favourite! It’s also a sunscreen I discovered last winter thanks to Odile Monod, and it’s brilliant! On the one hand, it’s very protective and waterproof, but it’s also super pleasant to wear thanks to the skincare ingredients it contains. It absorbs really well on me and doesn’t leave a white cast. It matches perfectly with all my foundations; it ticks all my boxes, I love it and it comes in a large capacity (80ml), which is great. Pretty much the same formula as the Isa Knox sunscreen above, but I find it a little lighter in texture and its finish is a little more matte too. Personally, I love them both, and I use them equally! They’re two great favourites, and I love the fact that they’re both so versatile and come in large sizes!!

In conclusion:

I’m going to do my best and be ruthless to give you a top 3 of these 20 (!) Korean sunscreens.

When it comes to mineral sunscreens, I think my favourite this year is the Makep:rem UV Defense Me No Sebum Sun Cream SPF50+ PA++++ because it really makes the skin look pretty when you have visible pores and texture like I do. And it’s matte without being drying, which I particularly like!

Among chemical sunscreens, I particularly like the Makep:rem UV Defense Me Watery Capsule Sun Cream SPF50+ PA++++ (yes, the brand has done a great job with their sunscreens this year!). It’s fluid, hydrating, fresh and I love the little freshness and hydration capsules! You know me. I love these kind of Galenic details lol

As for the hybrid sunscreens, as you’ll probably have gathered by now, I have two big winners that are very similar, and that I use alternately:

– the Isa Knox UV Sun Pro 365 Extreme Sun Fluid SPF50+ PA++++ ,

– and the CNP Laboratory Outdoor Fluid Sun SPF50+ PA++++ . Both products became favourites last winter, and I continued to use them throughout the rest of the year. And I intend to keep using them for a long time to come!

An honourable mention for the sunscreen mousse AHC Masters Cream To Sun Sherbet SPF50+ PA++++ because it’s a really fun product. But it’s too hard to get hold of for me to put it in my top 3. :/

That’s it for this year’s sunscreen selection for 2023! I hope it will help you find what you’re looking for and motivate you to use sunscreen all year round. With such a wide choice and such comfortable formulas, you’ve got no excuse! 😉

Please do tell me about your experience if you try any of these, or let me know which ones sound tempting! You can always drop me a comment. I’d love to hear from you! 🙂

  1. Thank you so much Bonnie for your extensive reviews! I had been looking forward to the Korean sunscreens for a long time. Unfortunately, there is nothing for me this year. Your favorites contain perfume (which I’m sensitive to), or they’re too rich, or I find them too expensive and/or hard to get (in Europe). So for now I will stick to my current favorites: Skin1004 Madagascar Centella Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum SPF 50+, Canmake Mermaid Skin Gel UV SPF50 (clear) and Benton Air Fit UV Defense Sun Cream SPF 50+.
But I’m always on the lookout for a super light, weightless, matte, fragrance-free sunscreen that I can dab over my makeup throughout the day without getting shiny, sticky skin. Do you maybe have a tip for me? Canmake comes closest so far.
Kindest regards from Joke from the Netherlands

    • Happy you liked it, Joke! 🙂
Sadly, I haven’t find the perfect sunscreen to reapply on top of makeup. This year , I tried a few options bit nothing was really a complete success… The Beauty Of Joseon matte sunscreen stick was probably the best option I tried, but I still find it a bit thick on the skin, and it disturbs my makeup a bit too. But it was still a decent option, and you can find it easily, even in Europe! Like here, for exemple:
Affiliate link to the Littlewonderland store
      Hope that helps! 🙂

      Groet, Wendy

  2. Thank you Bonnie. I love your reviews because they’re honest and contain lots of information. I’m a faithful user of Anessa Perfect UV Sunscreen Skincare Milk. I live in the tropics and here is not only hot but also humid, plus I hate to look like a shiny disco ball. I would like to try the Isa Knox UV Sun Pro 365 Extreme Sun Fluid and the CNP Laboratory Outdoor Fluid Sun, however they’re not always available in Olive Young Global or Yesstyle.

    • Yeah, I know these two are sadly not the easiest to find! But the Isa Knox is now available on YesStyle, they just added it the week before I published my article (the link is in the article 😉 ), so hopefully they’ll be more easy to find soon! 🙂

  3. So you are also looking for the ideal SPF to (re)apply over your makeup 😉 We are always advised to reapply SPF every two hours. I don’t do that because I prefer to avoid the sun. But when I cycle home after work I still want to be able to apply it again and not take off my entire makeup. Benton’s SPF is the best so far. The thinner and more liquid the better, a stick does not seem very pleasant to me, much too thick. I also have the SPF powder from Colorescience, but I don’t trust such a thin powder layer, at most as an extra touch-up. Just like I don’t trust a spray, too thin, and it makes your skin very shiny.
So I continue my search. Thank you for your comment and your thinking along with me Bonnie!

  4. No, I don’t think so either. To work properly, maybe an SPF hás to be a bit thick and sticky. And otherwise you just have to put on a hat or stay in the shade 😉
