My Face Sunscreen Guide 2024, part 1: I tell you all about 14 new European sunscreens I tried this year!

Tradition, tradition, did you say Tradition? It’s finally time for me to start the celebrations of my Face Sunscreen Guides for 2024! As usual, we’re kicking off with the European sunscreens. And this year, there was a lot of exciting stuff in the supermarkets, and I certainly enjoyed it! 🙂

Every year, I observe how much the range of sunscreens available in Europe is expanding, becoming wider and wider, and frankly, dare I say it, more satisfying.

As you know, I’m a fervent advocate of using sunscreen daily. But to convince the masses that this everyday gesture is essential for preserving the skin’s youth and beauty, I need solid arguments. And what better way than comfortable, pleasant and effective sunscreens to make this task less tedious, and even enjoyable! 🙂

I’m well aware that it’s not the most glamorous skincare product for many people, but for me it’s a real obsession. And I love exploring and testing different products to discover the hidden gems that will make daily use of sunscreens more enjoyable for you, dear readers!

And I can see that European consumers are beginning to understand the importance of using sunscreen all year round, as brands are increasingly responding to this need by offering textures that are finally more suited to this use.

As I’ve often said in my (many) articles on the subject of sunscreen, I have my own preferences when it comes to sunscreen products. I always detail them before telling you about my product tests, because I know that we don’t all have the same needs, the same skin type, etc. This is important to bear in mind because we all have our own criteria, and we’re not all looking for the same thing, far from it!

I’d also like to point out that for me, being in Dubai, I don’t really have access to the latest European products in shops down the road, and that I have to order online to be able to do most of my sunscreens testing, so the ease of purchase and proximity criteria can’t really be taken into account in my case! 😅

But this year I’ve had the opportunity to travel around Europe a bit, and I have to say I’ve been very pleasantly surprised by my European supermarket finds! Of course, Asian sunscreen products will always be my favourites, as you know, but I decided to give more affordable European brands a chance this year, and I wasn’t disappointed!

So let me take you on my journey to find the best sunscreen products for face of 2024, and today we’ll start with the European ones! 🙂

Note:
A tip for the impatient ones out there; you can go directly to the product you are interested in from the “Jump To” menu at the top of the page. The red ‘Jump to’ box on desktop, and in the top menu bar, the three dots on mobile. 😉

As usual, we’re kicking things off with European sunscreens. Admittedly, some have pleasantly surprised me. Yes, and in the best way. This year shows marked improvement, I assure you! 🙂 Read more

How I choose my sunscreens (in 2024):

If you already read my guide from last year, my criteria didn’t really change, but I prefer to repeat them. A reminder never hurts 😉.

I won’t go into details about how I use my sunscreens (how much I apply, when I apply them, how I remove them etc) as I have already covered this in many of my previous articles!

If you haven’t seen them already, I would encourage you to read my other articles on the topic. They are very comprehensive (if I can say so myself 😅) and should help you get a clearer understanding of sun protection:

For this year’s face sunscreen guide, I have chosen products solely for a daily use. This means that not all of them are suitable to be used on the beach or at the pool (= meaning most of them aren’t water-resistant).

Now, if you wish to find products suitable for the beach or for sports, I would refer you to my last article on the matter: Guide: how to choose the best sunscreen? In this article, I give you some suggestions about more resistant sunscreen products for outdoor activities.

So here is the list of important criteria for me when I choose a sunscreen product.

First, the UV protection! I prefer a product that filters both UVA and UVB filters. The sunscreen products I use have a SPF50+ and a PA ++++ (more explanations on these two values in this article about choosing sunscreen).

Chemical or mineral filters? Both!

And I also like it when the two are combined. To know the difference between mineral and chemical filters, their pros and cons, I invite you to read my article Sun protection: Q&A and common myths. I explain the differences in more detail.

I’m a fan of mineral filter products in the summer because they have a mattifying effect I appreciate when it’s hot and humid, as it is in Dubai right now. They are known to be less irritating for an everyday use. But it’s true that depending on the formula, they can leave a fairly visible white cast that isn’t the most attractive! For me and my fair skin, it looks acceptable, but if you have darker skin than me (not that difficult), it might be more noticeable!

However, European mineral sunscreens are just not great. Every time I tried one, it was a disaster (super thick, white, greasy, just terrible). As a result, you won’t actually see any mineral sunscreen in my selection today.

I really like chemical filter based sunscreens if I want a more glowy effect and a completely transparent texture. In the past, I found them more irritating than mineral sunscreens. But the formulas I tried this year use newer chemical filters, and I didn’t really experience any irritation. Some of them are even very soothing!

I prefer to use them during the winter because they make me look a bit too shiny in the summer. However, there is one notable exception that I’ll mention below. 😉

And I also like hybrid sunscreens that contain both chemical and mineral filters, because they usually have excellent protection and resistance. These can be a great choice for when you know you’ll be more exposed to the sun! 🙂

Don't miss out on new content we publish.
Hey, it could be what helps you find the exact skincare product you were looking for.
We wouldn't want you missing out on that now, would we 🙂

As for the rest of my ingredients I look for in sunscreen formulas, I appreciate when they contain antioxidant ingredients because they enhance the anti-ageing prevention effect of the product.

Formulas which contain too much fragrance are not my favourites (I don’t mind a bit of fragrance but not when it lingers all day). If my skin is sensitized, I set aside formulas that contain too much alcohol. Alcohol can be a little irritating in the long run, although it’s true that it can considerably lighten the texture of the sunscreen formulas. I’m lucky my skin tolerates it pretty well, most of the time.

Now, regarding the finish of my sunscreen products, I prefer when the product doesn’t leave a white cast. But if it’s just slightly white, and makeup can cover it, it’s fine.

And finally, I prefer when my sunscreen is compatible with makeup. I prefer to avoid those that make my foundation pill and/or make it look super greasy after only a few hours.

Generally speaking, I’m not a fan of tinted sunscreens.
The color never looks good on me, because I apply a good amount of product so that it’s really protective and I always end up straight orange! It’s also something I really dislike about them: especially with tinted sunscreens, I feel you tend to apply less product. It makes sense. It’s the way you would do it with a foundation. However, with sunscreens, a generous application is crucial if you want to be well protected!

By the way, if you want to see a picture of the quantity of sunscreen needed to be well protected, please check my first article and Q&A about sun protection. You’ll see, the quantity you need to use is definitely not a pea size of product!

Remember to always apply a generous amount of sunscreen and reapply it every two hours. You should do this if you’re exposed to UV rays, or immediately after swimming or sweating, to ensure the best protection.

Please note that this year there are no mineral sunscreens in my European selection. Honestly, I gave up years ago trying to find a European mineral sunscreen that suited me; all the ones I’ve tried so far just haven’t convinced me (too white, too greasy, they’re just not great). When it comes to mineral sunscreens, Asian ones are so much better, there’s no comparison!

Also this year, there are quite a few sunscreen formulas that look very similar, and oddly enough, they all come from brands in the L’Oréal group… 😉

Here is a selection of the different European sunscreens I tried this year!
I’ve organized them according to the type of UV filters they contain, and the links to order them online are at the end of each paragraph, underlined in red. 😉

100% chemical sunscreens:

The textures of these are generally delightful, nearly imperceptible, and very lightweight on the skin. A majority of them are sheer, a characteristic that is greatly appreciated. Some of them have a satin-like finish, so keep that in mind if you’re prone to excessive shine throughout the day. However, if you have a drier skin type, you will probably fancy them! 🙂

It can tend to sting my eyes a little, but the sensation doesn’t last, and when I apply make-up over it, it disappears completely. As for my skin, nothing to report, I tolerate it very well.

∎ Mattifying?
The finish is rather glowy, it makes my skin look shiny a little bit during the day, but not too much.

∎ Drying?
Quite the contrary, it’s hydrating and comfortable.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
It’s a good makeup base. It leaves the skin a little glowy, but you can apply makeup on top of it without any trouble, and it won’t pill. It makes my skin look a bit shiny during the day, especially on my T-zone, but I can control the shine easily with a bit of blotting powder.

∎ Would I repurchase?
Why not! Clearly, with this product specially formulated for Europe, the Bioré brand is trying to build on the success of its famous Japanese sunscreen, which is hugely popular in Japan of course, but also all over the world. The formula of this European version is a little less sophisticated than the Japanese version, in my humble opinion, but it’s still a very decent everyday sunscreen! The texture is quite pleasant to wear: light, fresh and moisturising. It also leaves the skin feeling comfortable, thanks to the skincare ingredients in its formula. And finally, you can find it in supermarkets in Europe, often on special offer, so it’s still a good deal, in my opinion! 🙂
Note, it also comes in an SPF30 version, the brand sent it to me too but I confess I didn’t try it and gave it away, as I tend to use higher SPF sunscreens on a daily basis.

Z70037873/1).

∎ Alcohol?
Yes.

∎ Fragrance?
Yes.

∎ Antioxidants?
Yes, niacinamide and vitamin E.

∎ Other skincare ingredients in the formula:
Niacinamide and phenylethyl resorcinol (from maritime pine), two ingredients that help to reduce hyperpigmentation.

∎ White cast?
No, it appears transparent on my skin.

∎ Irritant? Comedogenic?
If my skin is a bit irritated, it stings a bit when I apply it, but the sensation doesn’t last. Overall, I tolerate it quite well.

∎ Mattifying?
The finish on me is skin like, meaning it’s not completely matte but not too shiny either, quite natural looking like bare skin in a nutshell. It doesn’t make my skin look any more shiny than usual during the day.

∎ Drying?
Quite the contrary, it’s comfortable.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
It’s a good makeup base. Once the product has set (after a few minutes), you can apply makeup on top of it without any problem, and it’s not pilling. And it doesn’t make my skin more shiny than usual, so my makeup lasts as well as usual.

∎ Would I repurchase?
I don’t think so. Even though I like the product’s formula, the jar packaging isn’t the most practical, and I can’t help thinking that the formula isn’t optimally protected, and that it’s going to be damaged more quickly than a formula in a tube or pump bottle. And for a sunscreen, a damaged formula means that it no longer protects effectively, so that’s annoying. But otherwise, I have to admit that this sunscreen is pleasant to use, it leaves the skin feeling comfortable, and I also like its fairly natural finish, which doesn’t make me look shinier than usual. As for the effect on pigmentation spots, I don’t really have any, so it’s hard for me to judge the product on that, but in principle, I suppose it can’t do any harm! It also has the advantage of being affordable as it’s easy to find in supermarkets (at least in Europe), which is always a plus! 🙂

∎ Alcohol?
Yes.

∎ Fragrance?
Yes.

∎ Antioxidants?
Yes, niacinamide and vitamin E.

∎ Other skincare ingredients in the formula:
Hydrating glycerine and hyaluronic acid, anti-ageing adenosine and peptides, brightening niacinamide and a salicylic acid derivative for a gentle exfoliation.

∎ White cast?
No, it appears transparent on my skin.

∎ Irritant? Comedogenic?
No, not on me, my skin tolerates it well.

∎ Mattifying?
The finish on me is quite glowy, and it makes me look quite shiny during the day.

∎ Drying?
Quite the contrary, it’s quite comfortable.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
For combination to oily skin, it’s a challenge, as it looks quite shiny quickly, and doesn’t really help your makeup to last longer. But I imagine drier skin types might appreciate the glowy effect! At least, you can apply makeup on it without any problem, and it doesn’t pill.

∎ Would I repurchase?
Probably not. I find its finish too glowy for my combination skin. I imagine it would be more suitable for drier skin than mine! I like the fact that the formula is more skincare-oriented, with active ingredients designed for people with hyperpigmentation problems, but since that’s not my case, I don’t see any particular added value for my skin’s needs. Also, I find it a bit expensive, especially as it’s a supermarket product. Having said that, I imagine you can find it in supermarkets in Europe, often on special offer, so there’s probably a way of finding it at a better price! 😉

A very liquid fluid that absorbs easily into the skin. It dries in just a few seconds, leaving almost no residue on the skin. I know that not everyone likes this kind of super fluid texture because you have to apply it very quickly, but I personally really like it!

Z70038253/1).

∎ Alcohol?
Yes.

∎ Fragrance?
No.

∎ Antioxidants?
Yes, niacinamide and vitamin E.

∎ Other skincare ingredients in the formula:
Hydrating glycerine, moisturising and soothing Aloe Vera, purifying salicylic acid, zinc and niacinamide.

∎ White cast?
No, it appears transparent on my skin.

∎ Irritant? Comedogenic?
No, not at all, my skin tolerates it well.

∎ Mattifying?
The finish on me is rather matte, and it doesn’t make my skin more shiny than usual during the day. On the contrary, it even helps to absorb the excess shine.

∎ Drying?
No, not on me, but I don’t think it will be comfortable on dry skin.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
It’s a good makeup base, especially for combination skin. It has a fluid texture, but dries very quickly. You can’t massage it in for very long. But once the product has set, you can apply makeup without any problem, and it doesn’t pill. And it also doesn’t make my skin look shiny – on the contrary, it even helps to absorb excess shine. So my makeup even holds up better thanks to this sunscreen.

∎ Would I repurchase?
Yes, I think so! I really like this product! The texture is really nice to wear: it’s lightweight and you don’t feel it on your skin, which is really nice in summer, especially in Dubai. I also like the fact that it’s fragrance-free, which is always good (more for reasons of personal taste, I’m not a fan of overly strong fragrances that you can smell all day long). I think it’s more suitable for combination to oily skin though; it really is a mattifying sunscreen, and it even contains purifying ingredients! If I had one criticism to make, it would be its size. 40ml is small for a sunscreen! That’s why I’ll probably have to buy it again, as it’s going to run out very quickly. But to be fair, you can find it in supermarkets in Europe, often on special offer, so it’s still a good deal, in my opinion! 🙂

∎ Alcohol?
Yes.

∎ Fragrance?
Yes, a slightly sweet citrus scent, which I personally enjoy.

∎ Antioxidants?
Yes, a vitamin C derivative and vitamin E.

∎ Other skincare ingredients in the formula:
Hydrating glycerine and hyaluronic acid, anti-ageing adenosine and peptides.

∎ White cast?
No, it appears transparent on my skin.

∎ Irritant? Comedogenic?
No, not at all, my skin tolerates it well.

∎ Mattifying?
The finish on me is semi-matte, and it doesn’t make my skin appear any more shiny than usual during the day. There is a “Glow” version of this sunscreen, which I didn’t want to try as it leaves an iridescent finish, but I thought I’d mention it for those who might be interested.

∎ Drying?
No, on the contrary, I find it very comfortable and moisturising, while still being “fresh”. It’s very pleasant!

∎ How does it look with makeup?
It’s a good makeup base. In my opinion, it’s well suited to combination or even dry skin. It sets fairly quickly on the skin, and you can apply makeup on top of it without any problem, it doesn’t pill. And it doesn’t make my skin shiny more than usual (without especially keeping it super matte either; for that, the BHA + Niacinamide version is more suitable). But my makeup still holds well with it underneath.

∎ Would I repurchase?
Yes, of course! I really like this product! Its texture is super pleasant to wear: it’s lightweight, you can barely feel it on your skin, but it still leaves it feeling comfortable thanks to the skincare ingredients in its formula. It’s lightly scented but the smell is fresh and subtle, which I like. If I had one criticism to make, it would be its size. 40ml is small for a sunscreen! That’s why I’ll probably have to repurchase it, as it’s going to run out very quickly. But aside from that, you can find it in supermarkets in Europe, often on special offer, so it’s still a good deal, IMO! 🙂

∎ Alcohol?

∎ Texture:
A very liquid fluid that absorbs easily into the skin. It dries in just a few minutes, leaving almost no residue on the skin. I know that not everyone likes this kind of super fluid texture because you have to apply it very quickly, but I personally really like it.

Z70038504/1).

∎ Alcohol?

∎ Alcohol?
Yes.

∎ Fragrance?
Yes, and quite a lot. It has a rather cheap aquatic fragrance, which I don’t like at all and which is very strong.

∎ Antioxidants?
Yes, niacinamide and vitamin E.

∎ Other skincare ingredients in the formula:
Hydrating glycerine, purifying, brightening and anti-ageing niacinamide.

∎ White cast?
No, it appears transparent on my skin.

∎ Irritant? Comedogenic?
It stings my eyes a little, but that could be because of the very strong fragrance.

∎ Mattifying?
The finish on me is semi-matte, and it doesn’t make my skin more shiny than usual during the day. Instead, it helps to mattify my skin.

∎ Drying?
It’s comfortable on my skin.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
On me, it can tend to pill a bit when I apply makeup over it. Fortunately, this is fairly minimal. And it doesn’t make my skin look more shiny than usual; it’s more of a mattifying product, so I don’t have any problems with my makeup coming off more than usual, it even stays on better than usual!

∎ Would I repurchase?
No, probably not. I really dislike its fragrance, which I find too overpowering, and that’s a real turn-off for me. It’s a shame, though, because the formula is pretty good otherwise: it’s lightweight, fluid and you don’t feel it on your skin, which is pretty ideal for an everyday sunscreen! It’s also quite small in size (40ml), so it’ll probably run out very quickly (I’ll finish it on my legs lol). As for the rest, it has the advantage of being easy to find in supermarkets in Europe, so there are probably regular special offers. If you’re not deterred by the strong aquatic fragrance, this could be a good option! 😉

∎ Irritant? Comedogenic?
No, not at all, my skin tolerates it well.

∎ Mattifying?
Not particularly on me, but it doesn’t make my skin look more shiny than usual.

∎ Drying?
Quite the contrary, it’s hydrating and comfortable.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
It’s a good makeup base. You can apply makeup on it without any problem, and it doesn’t pill. And it doesn’t make my skin shiny any more than usual, so my makeup holds well as usual.

∎ Would I repurchase?
Why not? It’s a good lightweight sunscreen, ideal for everyday use. It’s pleasant to wear, moisturising and fragrance-free, which I always appreciate. You can apply makeup on top of it without any problem, which is always a plus. In short, a good sunscreen option for everyday use!
But if you try it and get a feeling of déjà-vu, that’s normal! The formula is almost identical to the sunscreen from the same brand, Vichy Capital Soleil UV-Age Daily Water Fluid SPF50+. In fact, the list of ingredients is very similar! And given that the latter was already very close to another La Roche Posay sunscreen, their Fluide Invisible (which no longer exists), it gives somewhat the impression that the L’Oréal group (which is behind all these brands) recycles its sunscreen formulas to bring them back to us each year with a different marketing approach! In itself, it’s no big deal, but it was funny when I realised it 😉 (and for the record, this Mineral 89 version is a bit cheaper than Vichy Capital Soleil UV-Age Daily Water Fluid SPF50+, especially when you compare the quantity, so it’s not bad at all!)

– TriAsorB (Laboratoires Pierre Fabre exclusive filter): UVA and UVB filter.

∎ Full List of Ingredients:
Avene Thermal Spring Water (Avene Aqua), C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate, Water (Aqua), Diisopropyl Adipate, Ethylhexyl Triazone, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Starch (Oryza Sativa Starch), Phenylene Bis-Diphenyltriazine, Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine, Potassium Cetyl Phosphate, C9-12 Alkane, Lauryl Glucoside, Polyglyceryl-2 Dipolyhydroxystearate, Glycerin, Tapioca Starch, Trimethylpentanediol/Adipic Acid/Glycerin Crosspolymer, Benzoic Acid, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Caprylyl Glycol, Citric Acid, Coco-Caprylate/Caprate, Glyceryl Laurate, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil (Glycine Soja Oil), Lens Esculenta (Lentil) Seed Extract (Lens Esculenta Seed Extract), Pentylene Glycol, PPG-1-PEG-9 Lauryl Glycol Ether, Red 33 (Ci 17200), Sodium Benzoate, Sodium Phytate, Tocopherol, Tocopheryl Glucoside, Xanthan Gum.

∎ Alcohol?
No.

∎ Fragrance?
No.

∎ Antioxidants?
Yes, vitamin E.

∎ Other skincare ingredients in the formula:
Hydrating glycerin.

∎ White cast?
A little at first, some of the filters it contains (TriAsorB and Tinosorb S too, to a lesser extent) can tend to be slightly whitening at first. Once you massage it in a little, this slight white cast fades away, fortunately.

∎ Irritant? Comedogenic?
No, not at all, my skin tolerates it very well, and it has been specially formulated with sensitive skin in mind.

∎ Mattifying?
The brand describes it as “ultra-matte”, but on me, the finish is rather semi-matte. My skin looks a bit shiny at the end of the day, but nothing more than usual.

∎ Drying?
Quite the contrary, it’s comfortable.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
The first time I applied it, I expected the texture to cling and pill. It’s a fluid texture, but it dries very quickly and ‘clings’ to the skin a little as it sets. You can’t massage it in for very long. It’s not pilling on me, but it can tend to emphasize drier areas and the texture of my skin. You can feel it a little when you wear it, so it’s not as imperceptible as I’d have liked. It’s not particularly mattifying, but it doesn’t make my skin shine more than usual either. In short, it’s not a disaster, but it’s not the best base to wear makeup on top of.

∎ Would I repurchase?
I’ll be honest, I was expecting the worst with this product. Usually, Avene sunscreens don’t work for me at all (I had the opportunity to talk about it in more detail in this article by the way 😉 ). On me, they’re often far too thick, greasy and cakey for me to enjoy. But I have to say that in comparison, this new sunscreen 2024 is still much, much better than the other sunscreens I’ve tested from the brand. For an alcohol-free (and fragrance-free) sunscreen, its texture is much more pleasant than I expected! It’s not my favourite sunscreen from this selection, but I have to admit that I was still pleasantly surprised. And I’m sure sensitive skin will love it!
It’s SPF 50, not 50+, but it’s still resistant and waterproof, so I think you can use it for outdoor activities (remember to reapply it regularly, though!).
In short, there is finally some improvement at Avène and I love to see it! 🙂

Yes, vitamin E and an extract of Mediterranean seaweed.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
It’s a pretty good makeup base. It’s a fluid texture that absorbs fairly quickly. Once the product has set (after a few minutes), you can apply makeup on top of it without any problem. On me, it has a slight tendency to pill, but it’s quite light, and it’s not systematic either. It doesn’t make my skin look any shinier than usual, so I don’t have any problems with makeup wearing off more than usual, which is always nice..

∎ Would I repurchase?
I’m not sure. I like it, it’s a good sunscreen for everyday use overall, but I find it quite expensive. And there’s nothing in its formula that really justifies its price in terms of ingredients. OK, it’s water-resistant, so that’s handy if you want to use it on the beach, I admit. But then, I find there are other waterproof options that are just as good at a more affordable price! (like the Avene above for example, or other sunscreens I’ve mentioned in previous years 😉 )

∎ Alcohol?
No.

∎ Fragrance?
No. You can smell the ingredients a bit at first, but it doesn’t last.

∎ Antioxidants?
Yes, several: vitamin E, ectoin and fermented folic acid.

∎ Other skincare ingredients in the formula:
Plenty! Hydrating glycerine, beta-glucan, ectoin and hyaluronic acid, anti-ageing peptides, soothing allantoin and repairing ceramides. Clearly, this is an ideal formula for sensitive skin and/or skin with a damaged barrier.

∎ White cast?
No, it appears transparent on my skin.

∎ Irritant? Comedogenic?
No, not on me, my skin tolerates it well. It might sting my eyes a little on application, but the sensation fades quickly.

∎ Mattifying?
The finish on me is slightly glowy at first, then quite quickly becomes semi-matte. It doesn’t make my skin look more shiny than usual during the day.

∎ Drying?
Quite the contrary, it’s hydrating and comfortable.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
It’s a good makeup base. You can easily apply makeup on top of it, and it’s noot pilling. It doesn’t make my skin look more shiny than usual during the day, so I don’t have any problems with my makeup wearing off more than usual.

∎ Would I repurchase?
Yes, but only on one condition! I’ll start with the pros, because this sunscreen has plenty of them.
Its texture is super pleasant to wear; fresh, light, you can barely feel it on your skin, but it still leaves it comfortable and moisturised thanks to the skincare ingredients in its formula. It’s soothing too, and designed for sensitive skin. It’s alcohol-free, too, which is great. I also like the fact that it’s fragrance-free, which is always better (more for reasons of personal taste, I’m not a fan of overly strong fragrances that linger all day). It comes in a large size, 100ml, which makes it an unbeatable value for money! The brand describes it as water-resistant, which means you can use it for outdoor and/or beach activities. Overall, it’s a great sunscreen option!
But its major flaw is that its packaging really needs to be reviewed, in my opinion. It’s in a tube, but it has a pump, and unfortunately, the pump keeps getting stuck when you use it. There’s nothing more annoying than having faulty packaging when in the middle of the process of applying your sunscreen! What a waste of time in the morning! Personally, having tried several products from this brand, I’ve often had problems with their packagings. So I’d like to take this opportunity to send them a message: Transparent Lab, you really need to do something about this! Your products are great, but your packaging does them a disservice! So yes, I can see myself repurchasing this sunscreen in the future, but only if the brand changes its packaging.

∎ Alcohol?
Yes.

∎ Fragrance?
Yes, and quite a lot. It has a rather cheap aquatic fragrance, which I don’t like at all and which is very strong.

∎ Antioxidants?
Yes, licorice extract and vitamin E.

∎ Other skincare ingredients in the formula:
Hydrating glycerine, betaine and hyaluronic acid.

∎ White cast?
No, it appears transparent on my skin (even with the mineral filter).

∎ Irritant? Comedogenic?
It has a tendency to irritate my skin, but above all it stings my eyes (and that’s really unpleasant).

∎ Mattifying?
The finish on me is rather satiny and it tends to make my skin look shinier than usual during the day.

∎ Drying?
Quite the contrary, it’s quite hydrating.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
Unfortunately, it makes my makeup pill, and it makes my skin look quite shiny during the day, which affects the staying power of my makeup.

∎ Would I repurchase?
No. For me, this sunscreen isn’t really a hit. The fragrance is far too strong, it stings my eyes and I can’t really wear makeup on top of it. In the same range, I prefer the Derma Skin Clear version, even though I don’t like the fragrance either. In short, I’m not really into Nivea Sun Europe for the face. :/

∎ Antioxidants?
Yes, vitamin E and soy stem cells.

∎ Other skincare ingredients in the formula:
Hydrating glycerine and hyaluronic acid.

∎ White cast?
No, it appears transparent on my skin (even with the mineral filters).

∎ Irritant? Comedogenic?
No, not at all, my skin tolerates it well.

∎ Mattifying?
The finish on me is slightly satiny, it makes my skin look a bit shiny during the day. I think I’ll probably use this sunscreen more in winter.

∎ Drying?
Quite the contrary, it’s hydrating and comfortable.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
I can wear makeup on top of it without any problem, but as it tends to make my skin look a bit shiny, I have to apply a lot of powder to prevent my makeup from fading more quickly than usual.

∎ Would I repurchase?
Why not? It’s a really nice sunscreen, more like a moisturiser than a sunscreen. On my combination skin, it’s a little too satiny for me in summer, but I imagine it’ll be more suitable in winter. Otherwise, it’s really pleasant and suitable for sensitive skin (it contains no alcohol or fragrance). I also like its generous pump system, which helps me to manage the right amount to apply for my face and neck (I usually apply two pumps of product). Finally, it’s pretty affordable too, which is always a plus! 🙂

In conclusion:

My European sunscreen trials this year have been full of crushes!

My favourites are without a doubt the ones from Garnier, which are strangely enough quasi-copycats of each other (if anyone understands L’Oréal’s marketing strategy for its brands, please explain lol).

– Such a fan of the lightweight texture of the Garnier Ambre Solaire Super UV Niacinamide Anti-imperfections Fluid SPF50+ , which is actually exactly the same as this one above

– the Garnier BHA+ Niacinamide Daily UV SPF50+ . I recommend to compare which one of the two is the less expensive where you live! 😉

– I also really like the vitamin C version, the Garnier Ambre Solaire Super UV Vitamin C Anti-Dark Spots Fluid SPF50+ which is, again, almost the same as this one above

– the Garnier Vitamin C Daily UV Invisible SPF50+ . For this one, I tried the Invisible version, not the Glow version, which I didn’t test because I’m not sure it would suit my combination skin.

Three honorable mentions for:

– the Vichy Mineral 89 Moisture Boosting Daily Fluid 72h SPF50+ , which is a good, comfortable option for every day and reminds me a lot of another Vichy sunscreen that I also like.

– And I also really like the Transparent Lab Lightweight Sunscreen SPF50+ which is the best value for money, especially regarding the quantity, in my selection. The brand just needs to sort out this problem of faulty packaging!

– Finally, I really appreciate the SOS Serum SOS SPF50 which will be perfect for me in winter!

For the next part of my Face Sunscreen Guide 2024 articles, I’ll talk about Asian sunscreens (Japanese and Korean), which you know I adore! I ask for your patience, though. I’ve tested a lot of them, so it’s going to take me a while to put it all together in writing! 🙂

  1. I’m looking for a mineral sunscreen for sailing. I sweat a lot so it needs to be very water resistant. You’ve said that the Korean mineral sunscreens are much better than the European. I know you haven’t done your 2024 Korean sunscreen review yet, but I’m wondering if you think that all the Korean minerals are more for daily wear, and not for outdoors. Thank you for your informative articles.

    • Hi Janice and thank you very much! 🙂
I can confirm that Korean mineral sunscreens are definitely for daily wear; they’re usually not water resistant, so they’re not your best option to use for sailing. If you want good options for outdoor activities, I really recommend Japanese sunscreens. They’re not mineral though; usually, they’re chemical or hybrid sunscreens (with both mineral and chemical flters). My 2024 Japanese sunscreen guide will be published in a few days, next week if everything goes to plan! 🙂
