Face Sunscreen Guide 2019

Intro
At a glance

Discover my Face Sunscreen Guide for this year 2019!

Hello, my name is Bonnie, and I am a pathological face sunscreen tester. My ultimate goal: finding the perfect everyday sunscreen! So I test a lot of them, all the time. Here is my Face Sunscreen Guide for  2019! 😉

As you know, I have already written it in many of my other articles, using sun protection for my face is something I do every single day.

I use a sunscreen every day of the year, winter or summer. And of course, I always insist that in Dubai, given the weather and the bright sunshine outside, I have no choice.

But quite honestly, even if I lived elsewhere, it would be the same. Yes, even if I lived in a northern country!

I don’t go outside without moisturizer during the day, and now (at least for several years now) I don’t go without sunscreen either!

Daily UV protection is certainly the most effective anti-aging thing you can do for your skin. Regarding skin aging, it’s definitely better to prevent than to cure, and daily UV protection is clearly excellent prevention!

And so I keep looking for the best sunscreen for me: effective of course, but also pleasant to wear and more complicated, which allows me to easily apply make-up on top!

So here is the result of my many face sunscreens tests for the year 2019!

Sun protection: Q&A and common myths Skincare Sun protection: Q&A and common myths Even if sun protection is relevant all year long, I definitely feel this topic interests more people at the moment, with summer just around the corner… Read more

How I choose my sunscreens (in 2019):

If it’s not already done, I strongly encourage you to read my sunscreen articles from last year. They’re very complete (if I can say so myself) and I answer many questions and preconceived ideas about sun protection:

Sun protection: Q&A and common myths

Sunscreen guide 2018

Buying guide: reef-safe sunscreens

Also, for this year’s guide, I would like to point out that, given the way I use it, I mainly chose products made for an everyday usage. Not all of these products are suitable to use on the beach or in the pool (especially if you are swimming, as they’re not necessarily waterproof).

The only face sunscreen I take with me if I know I will be outdoors for a while, and I will be more exposed than usual and/or swimming, is the  Shiseido Anessa essence UV sunscreen mild milk SPF50 .

It was one of my favorites last year, and I still use it a lot this year. It’s clearly my most protective sunscreen product! (I talk about it in more detail in my Sunscreen guide 2018).

My selection criteria for my face sunscreens have changed a little compared to last year.

I’m still looking for a product that filters both UVA and UVB filters. Most of the ones I tried have an SPF 50 (I don’t use those below 30) and they also have a high PA (3 or 4 +).

Last year, I favored mineral filters over chemical filters because the latter have a reputation for being more irritating for the skin. This year, I ventured much more on the side of chemical filter-based sunscreens, and I didn’t have a bad reaction with most of them (no breakout, no irritation).

Now, when I really need to be well protected (as I explained above), I always prefer formulas that combine chemical and mineral filters. Mixed formulas are more stable and offer a better protection spectrum. The Shiseido Anessa essence UV sunscreen mild milk SPF50 is a mixed formula, with both types of filters.

To know the difference between mineral and chemical filters, their advantages and disadvantages, you can take a look at my article Sun protection: Q&A and common myths.

Ideally, I prefer to use non-nano mineral filters because they’re supposed to be bad for the environment. I also try to avoid, if I can, the most polluting chemical filters: oxybenzone, octinoxate (these two have just been banned in Hawaii), enzacamene (or Parsol 5000) and octocrylene in particular. That being said, these requirements mainly concern my body products as I explain in my article Buying guide: reef-safe sunscreens

I appreciate when a sunscreen formula contains antioxidant ingredients because they have an interesting cellular protection (= anti-aging) action. Other skincare ingredients in the formula such as hyaluronic acid or niacinamide are always good too. But it doesn’t matter if there are none because I already use all these ingredients in my skincare routine.

I avoid if I can fragranced formulas (fragrance can be photosensitizing) and if I have sensitized skin, I put aside formulas that contain too much alcohol. It can be a little irritating over time, although it has the ability to considerably lighten the texture of the formulas.

Regarding my position on silicones, I completely changed my mind on the issue, and it doesn’t really bother me anymore if my sunscreen contains some of them. Not all silicones are created equal, and if the ones used in my sunscreen are volatile and lightweight, my skin reacts very well to them in general and I have no problem with them at all.

For the finish of my sunscreen products, I prefer when the product doesn’t leave a white cast.

And finally, the sunscreen product must be compatible with makeup, preferably. Some sunscreens tend to break the foundation applied on top (or make it peell) and/or make it look super oily only after a few hours.

So here are the different sunscreens I tried this year. I have classified them according to the types of UV filters they contain.

100% mineral sunscreens:

My favourites for the summer because they generally leave a matte finish (more than sunscreens based on chemical filters).

No.

∎ Mattifying?
Yes, I wouldn’t recommend it for dry skin because it enhances dry skin areas.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
Beware of dry areas, which it tends to enhance and that makeup usually accentuates (especially powder). On the other hand, base makeup lasts longer with it thanks to its mattifying effect.

∎ Would I repurchase?
Maybe. I found it drying when I used it in the spring but I may appreciate its mattifying effect in the middle of summer. However, I find it quite expensive compared to other sunscreens I’m currently using.

REN Clean Screen Mineral SPF 30

My review of the REN Clean Screen Mineral SPF 30 (with photos).

100% chemical sunscreens:

Their textures are often very pleasant to use, as they are quite lightweight and unnoticeable on the skin. They’re usually invisible. They can leave a slight sheen on some people, so be careful if you tend to have a shiny T-zone during the day.

Avène Fluid SPF 50+ (fragrance-free version):

∎ Price:
$14 for 50ml.

∎ Protection:
SPF50+

∎ Made in:

∎ Irritant? Comedogenic?
No, this product didn’t cause me any break out or irritation.

∎ Mattifying?
Yes, it has a dry effect upon application, and it helps the skin to stay matte for several hours.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
You can easily apply make-up on over it. Be careful, however, if you have drier areas, it tends to enhance a little because of the “dry touch” effect.

∎ Would I repurchase?
Why not? Despite the white cast, I find that this product is not too bad. It offers good protection against UVA and UVB rays. The filters used are not irritating, they’re also biodegradable and the formula isn’t breaking me out! I appreciate its matte finish, and I love the packaging with the super practical pump! The brand also communicates on the right amount to apply on the face and neck, and it’s 7 pumps. It’s waterproof, so you can use it at the beach or pool, which is a good point. I appreciate the fact that it’s available in several versions (without or with fragrance, and it also exists in a tinted version). Finally, the price is affordable.

Yes, vitamin E.

∎ Other skincare ingredients in the formula:
Some moisturizing glycerin.

∎ White cast?

If you have sensitive or sensitized skin, I wouldn’t recommend it because of the high alcohol content. That being said, the brand claims that it’s tested to be applied near the eyes.

∎ Mattifying?
Yes.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
You can easily apply makeup on top, it’s perfect as a primer and it even helps the makeup to last longer.

∎ Would I repurchase?
Probably. I think this is the first time I’m using a French sunscreen product that has obviously been designed for everyday use, not just for holidays! As a result, the texture is really nice, it reminds me a lot of my favorite Asian sunscreens. The protection is very good, on both UVA and UVB rays. It’s also perfect as a makeup base. A little downside, its high alcohol content which gives it such a light texture but which can be potentially irritating on some skins, especially used every day. It’s waterproof, so you can use it at the beach or pool, which is a good point. I also appreciate the fact that it’s available in several versions (without or with fragrance, and it also exists in a tinted version). Its value for money is really excellent!

No, I didn’t find it irritating and it didn’t cause me any break out either.

∎ Mattifying?
No, more like the other way around. I think it’s probably more suitable for dry skin because on me, I look really shiny just after the application and it gets worse during the day.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
I can apply makeup on top but it looks super shiny after a maximum of 2 hours. The makeup doesn’t last well at all. I don’t think this product was designed for everyday use, but rather with the idea that it was a cream to take with you on holiday.

∎ Would I repurchase?
No, and I’m probably not going to finish it. I hate its fragrance and I look like a disco ball with it so; despite its good points (high protection, nice formula), it’s a big no for me!

Caudalie Anti-Wrinkle Face Suncare SPF50

Rohto Skin Aqua UV Super Moisture Milk Pink:

∎ Price:
Between $10 and $14 for 40ml.

∎ Protection:
SPF50+, PA++++

∎ Made in:
Japan

∎ Texture:
A very liquid fluid that you have to shake before applying it and that easily absorbs into the skin. It dries super quickly without leaving any heavy effect on the skin.

∎ Color:
This product is light pink. It’s a “tone-up” sunscreen product, a very popular concept in Asia, which consists in lightening the complexion to give the skin an almost opalescent glow. This type of hybrid product can be used alone but in general, they are considered more as a protective makeup primer (with a color correcting effect). However, this kind of product only works on fairly light skin.

∎ UV Filters:
– Octinoxate: chemical filter that filters UVB.
– Uvinul A Plus: chemical filter that filters UVB.
– Zinc Oxide: mineral filter that filters UVA and UVB.
– Titane Dioxide: mineral filter that filters UVA and UVB.

∎ Effects on the environment?
Octinoxate is suspected to have a potentially harmful effect on the environment (feel free to do your own research if this topic is important for you).

∎ Ingredients list:
Cyclopentasiloxane, water, zinc oxide, ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, BG, diethylhexyl succinate, polymethylsilsesquioxane, ethanol, hydrous silica, lauryl PEG-9 polydimethylsiloxyethyl dimethicone, lauroyllysine, titanium oxide, diethylamino Hexyl hydroxybenzoylbenzoate, glycerin, sodium hyaluronate, hydrogen dimethicone, triethoxysilylethyl polydimethylsiloxyethylhexyl dimethicone, methyl paraben, EDTA-2 Na, acetyl hyaluronic acid Na, hydrolyzed collagen, arginine, bisethylhexyl hydroxy dimethoxy benzyl malonate, Polyglyceryl-2 triisostearate, iron oxide, tin oxide, Al hydroxide, dimethicone, tocopherol, mica, talc, red 226

∎ Silicone-free?
No.

∎ Alcohol-free?

∎ Fragrance-free?
Yes.

∎ Anti-oxidants?
Yes, vitamin E and RonaCare AP.

∎ Other skincare ingredients in the formula:
Yes, moisturizing glycerin and hyaluronic acid, and repairing and soothing arginine.

∎ White cast?
More or less, rather a slightly light pink than white, but this is actually the desired effect for this product.

∎ Irritant? Comedogenic?
No, I didn’t find it irritating and it didn’t cause me any break out either.

∎ Mattifying?
Not really, but it doesn’t make me look more oily during the day.

∎ How does it look with makeup?
It is an excellent makeup primer, the foundation glides perfectly over it and it doesn’t make me look more oily during the day. And I like the glowy effect it gives, very pretty if you have fair skin!

∎ Would I repurchase?
Why not. The protection is very good, on both UVA and UVB rays, and it’s waterproof. It’s perfect as a makeup primer, and even has a very pretty color correcting effect. It’s not a very “clean” formula, but it doesn’t bother me too much. It’s quite cost-effective (on the other hand, it’s a small 40ml bottle).

Skin Aqua UV Super Moisture Milk Pink

In conclusion:

So, my top 3 picks:

– coming in first, the one I use the most because its formula meets all my requirements is the  Isntree Sensitive Balancing Sun Protection .

– as equal second, the Purito Centella Green Level Safe Sun

and the Klairs Soft Airy UV Essence because they’re super pleasant to use, very protective, and they both have nice formulas with good skincare ingredients. Honestly, they feel like moisturizers!

EDIT 1/23/2021:
Please be aware that these two sunscreens (Purito and Klairs) have been discontinued due to concerns about their actual SPF value.

– in the third position, the  Anthelios Shaka Fluid SPF 50+ (fragrance-free version) because it’s very protective, easily accessible and not too expensive.

It also has a cosmetically elegant texture, which is always pleasant to use daily.

As I said at the beginning of this article, if I want “heavy-duty” protection, I’m always faithful to my Shiseido Anessa essence UV sunscreen mild milk SPF50 which I told you more about last year in my sunscreen guide 2018.

And another product I discovered last year, and that I still love this year, is the  Etude House Sunprise Mild Airy Finish I told you about in my article An overview of 3 Korean sunscreens.

The brand just released it in an Olaf limited edition and when I saw it in store in Korea, I just couldn’t resist!

This is where I am right now with my face sunscreens tests. I’m not going on holiday this summer, so I won’t have the opportunity to test body sunscreens (in Dubai, the heat outside is unbearable in summer, so I won’t go outside for the next couple of months) which means I don’t think I’ll be writing another body sunscreens guide this year.

The one I wrote last year is still relevant though, I don’t think the brands I’m talking about in this article have reformulated their products:

Buying guide: reef-safe sunscreens Skincare Buying guide: reef-safe sunscreens As you probably know, I take sun protection very seriously. And when I go on vacation, I’m particularly careful when I choose my body sunscreens. I want them to provide effective UV protection but also to be environment-friendly. Read more

Finally, I went on holiday to Korea a few weeks ago, and you know me, I didn’t come back empty-handed! I couldn’t help but pick up several Korean sunscreens while I was there. So I’ll continue my tests and if there are some gems in the batch, I promise to tell you more about them here! 😉

  1. Fantastic article Bonnie! I’m excited to try the Purito Centella Sunscreen, I just got it yesterday and haven’t used it yet. I’m also going to read last year’s guide, so thank you so much for taking the time to be so thorough.

  2. Thankyou for producing such a comprehensive sunscreen guide. I’m dark skinned so never really paid attention to the need for a daily SPF, I was mainly put off by the white cast the sunscreens I’ve used caused, so only bothered during my annual holiday. I now know better!! I’ve purchased three of the Koreans sunscreens that you’ve reviewed so I look forward to trying them all out. Thankyou

    • I’m so happy my guide was useful to you! 😄
I hope you’ll like these sunscreens as much as I do, and please, feel free to come back here to tell me what you think of them 😉👍

  3. Thanks, Bonnie, for being so thorough with your sunscreen guide! I’m one of those people who are constantly looking for the best sunscreen available in the market, too. It’s such a HUGE relief to find a review by someone with standards for sunscreen so high and mind so open to ones made in countries other than just the USA! I’m Asian with a fair complexion, so to see your reviews including Korean and Japanese sunscreens, I just feel super appreciative of your warrior attitude when it comes to grasping knowledge on good sunscreens altogether! Good work, my fellow sunscreen lover!

    • Thank you very much, Celine! I definitely appreciate the compliment and feel honored that you liked my article, especially as a fellow sunscreen lover! 😉
I’m definitely obsessed with sunscreens and I love to try many different formulas!

      • Hi Bonnie,
This is Celine coming back after almost 3 months of having tried and LOVING the Purito Centella Green Safe Sun 😆 Gotta express my gratitude, ya know. It’s been truly a dream. I just I feel like I’ve found a truly safe place with this sunscreen, all thanks to your comprehensive guide!
        Happy New Year!🎊

  4. Great article, thanks for the recommendations! I’m eyeing the LRP sunscreen next 🙂 But FYI I think you may have made a mistake on the ingredients list for the Krave sunscreen. This is the list directly from their website, and it is different from what you have posted. Also, according to the list from their website, the Beet Shield does not contain fragrance.

“Water, Butyloctyl Salicylate, Dibutyl Adipate, Beta Vulgaris (Beet) Root Extract, Alcohol, Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate, Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine, Ethylhexyl Triazone, Glycerin, Pentylene Glycol, Isoamyl p-Methoxycinnamate, Polysilicone-15, Inulin Lauryl Carbamate, Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Sodium Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Tromethamine, Methylpropanediol, Isohexadecane, Caprylyl Glycol, Glyceryl Caprylate, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, 1,2-Hexanediol, Polysorbate 80, Lithospermum Erythrorhizon Root Extract, Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil, Sorbitan Oleate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Allantoin, Epigallocatechin Gallate, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Butylene Glycol, Resveratrol”

    • Hi, thank you very much!
Oh that’s weird! Maybe they changed the formula, then 🤔
But I purchased this sunscreen almost 2 years ago, this guide was written last year so this was the ingredients list of the product I tried back then.
I’d be curious to know if it was reformulated since then!
PS: My ingredients list was wrong, you’re right! I probably messed up during my translation from the French version of this article! I analysed the correct ingredients list though, but I pasted the wrong ingredients list! Sorry about the confusion!
