At a glance

My test and thoughts about the antioxidant, moisturizing and soothing Superoxide Dismutase Saccharide Mist (SDSM2) from the Canadian skincare brand NIOD!

Do you think a skincare product in mist format can be as active as a serum treatment? NIOD, the innovative Canadian skincare brand, seems to think so with their Superoxide Dismutase Saccharide Mist (SDSM2)!

I already mentioned NIOD in my article Focus on Copper Peptides. I really appreciate this very technical Canadian skincare brand, which is part of the group Deciem (mostly known for their brand The Ordinary that I introduced on my blog over 3 years ago now.)

I admit NIOD seems intimidating at first. And the way they communicate about their products doesn’t help because it’s sometimes so opaque that it can be a bit discouraging!

Let’s take the example of this Superoxide Dismutase Saccharide Mist (or SDSM2 in short). I’m on my third bottle. I think I discovered it two years ago and I’ve been repurchasing it regularly ever since. But I’ve never talked about it here because, until now, I couldn’t bother to dive into the formula and analyze it for a review! (yes, I know, bad Bonnie)

Yet in reality, it’s not that complex. If you attempt to read between the lines of the over-complicated ingredient descriptions on NIOD’s website, their products are often very interesting, effective and truly innovative.

And this is precisely the case with this SDSM2 mist! So I suggest we dive into this pretty turquoise liquid formula to unravel the mysteries of its ingredients and give you my thoughts about its effectiveness 😉

Focus On: Copper Peptides Ingredients Focus On: Copper Peptides According to some, copper peptides are one of the most effective anti-aging ingredients available on the market! However, they remain relatively unknown to the public at large and rarely used by cosmetic brands… Today, let’s discuss copper peptides, shall we? Read more

NIOD Superoxide Dismutase Saccharide Mist (SDSM2), product presentation:

NIOD describes the Superoxide Dismutase Saccharide Mist as a skin treatment mist (not to be confused with a toner), which acts as a shield against oxidative stress, water loss/dehydration and skin inflammation.

These three phenomena contribute to the loss of visible skin quality over time. In other words, all three are accelerated skin aging factors.

Basically, the aim of this mist is to be a protection for your skin against the stress of everyday life that makes it age faster. Pretty promising! 😉

If I had to categorize this product, I would definitely classify it as an essence. If you’re a regular reader, you know that I’m a big fan of these hybrid products, liquid skincare treatments, combining toner and serum qualities.

Here, the advantage, compared to a classic essence, is clearly the mist format, which makes it a super pleasant product to use. Using it feels super nice, and it’s so great to help me cool down right now! (Dubai is extra hot at the moment).

I use it as I would use an essence, preferably at the beginning of my routine, before my serum(s).

The brand describes SDSM2 Mist as a versatile three-in-one liquid treatment/ skincare product that is anti-oxidant/anti-aging, moisturizing and soothing at the same time.

If you inspect the formula of this SDSM2 mist, you’ll see that even though it’s simple, the ingredients it contains are quite potent!

First, there is the famous Superoxide Dismutase which gives part of its name to the product. It’s a stable enzyme derived from yeast, which helps the body to protect itself against oxidation (in simpler terms, it helps the skin age slower!). It also has a powerful anti-inflammatory and soothing effect!

Then there’s purified North American Four O’ Clock Flower water. This ingredient derived from an Aztec plant helps to reduce inflammation and therefore has a very soothing effect.

Then there are humectant ingredients (= hydrating), marine exopolysaccharides, which prevent the skin from losing water. It also has glycerin and betaine, which are also two hydrating ingredients.

And finally, the mist contains mineral extracts of malachite, a rock with anti-oxidant properties that protects against free radical damage and also gives the SDSM2 its beautiful turquoise color!

NIOD Superoxide Dismutase Saccharide Mist (SDSM2), my experience:

I told you at the beginning of this article, this is my third bottle! I’ve been using SDSM2 regularly for several years now.

If I love this product, it’s clearly first and foremost for its mist format. I love to use it, especially during the scorching summer we have here in Dubai!

The mist is not the finest, it sprays a lot of product but frankly I like this generous effect. And the generosity is also in the bottle’s size: a massive 240ml!

You can definitely use it liberally: in the morning, in the evening, on the decolleté, on the body… You’ll have enough in there! 😉

For my dehydrated combo skin, it really helps to maintain my hydration without feeling heavy on the skin and I also feel that it boosts the effectiveness of the products I apply afterwards.

For a super minimal routine, I sometimes used just this mist, a moisturizer and my sunscreen, and that’s it! My skin felt comfortable all day.

I really appreciate its antioxidant protection. I talk about it regularly. You know that I systematically include antioxidant products in my routines (especially in the morning). I usually apply an antioxidant serum but this mist can totally replace this kind of product! As I said before, this is a proper treatment (don’t be fooled by its liquid texture, it’s concentrated!).

Antioxidants are important to me because they are preventive ingredients that help to protect against accelerated skin aging. Clearly, with antioxidants, I’m investing in the future of my skin! Since I’ve been using them for about 15 years and my skin is not too saggy for my age (41), I really think they work 😜

And finally, this mist has a very effective soothing effect! And since I’ve finally started to use tretinoin a few weeks ago, I can tell you that I greatly appreciate its immediate calming effect! It refreshes right away and I don’t hesitate to use it whenever my skin needs it (you can use it during the day if you want).

Given its size, it usually lasts me several months, even if I use it generously. It’s a little expensive at first but considering its size, the quantity/price ratio is fairly good!

In conclusion:

For me, this NIOD Superoxide Dismutase Saccharide Mist ticks many boxes of a great skincare product:

  • it’s effective (moisturizing, soothing and anti-oxidant),
  • it’s easy and enjoyable to use (I can include it in my routine super easily and it’s a lovely feeling),
  • it lasts a long time, and has a good quantity/price ratio.

In short, I will continue to repurchase it and use it in my routine!

The NIOD Superoxide Dismutase Saccharide Mist (SDSM2) retails between $45 and $50 for 240ml, depending on the retailers.

  1. Bonnie another great insightful review on a product I’ve been hearing a lot about! Will definitely try to get myself one of these. Also, can I just say this website has truly been a joy to read especially for someone like myself who is still very much a skincare novice. With that being said, I noticed that you’ve tried and reviewed both the I’m From Rice Toner and the Laneige Skin Cream, out of these two which one would you suggest I go for as a toner? (My skin type is combo/dry). Thank you so much Bonnie and keep up the good work, excited to read what you have in line for us. 🙂

    • Thank you Eugene, it’s very kind ❤️❤️❤️

If your skin tends to be dry, both of these products could work for you! I personally don’t use the Laneige Cream Skin as a toner. On me, it works better as a very liquid moisturizer. But if your skin feels super dry, you can totally use it as a rich toner! 😉
